It was a fair point. Sam planned to try the idea anyway, simply because he literally had not come up with anything else, but he was fully aware that it probably wasn't going to work. That nothing in his usual wheelhouse was going to work here. "That just means we have to figure out how to play by the rules of this universe, if we want to get anywhere," he said. "Or... accept it for what it is."
The latter was certainly easier, especially considering how they were all being watched here for suspicious activity. Or at least, that was the theory. Sam had never seen any sign of the law enforcement doing anything to anyone, but that was probably because everyone was playing nice. Whatever it was about this place, the funhouse mirror effect or something else, it seemed to do the trick.
He was distracted from that by the smile, and the touch on his shoulder, both of which were out of the norm for his dad, who wasn't accustomed to showing affection. Maybe it wasn't just that people were scared of getting into trouble for misbehavior. Maybe something about this place simply brought out the best in them. Dean had certainly been more relaxed and at ease even when Sam had first arrived, and his dad had only been here a few days, but he was already cheering up. And it looked like maybe he would take Sam's advice. Storybrooke was a miracle of miracles.
"Oh, man," he said, shaking his head. "It's a hell of a long story, dad. I'm really not proud of most of it." He looked down at the ground. "And you know some of it already, or the gist of it anyway... I mean, with what you told Dean right before you..." He was stalling, just a little. "You were right, mostly. I didn't... turn into the villain, I was... being set up to be Lucifer's vessel. His... meatsuit."
He let out a breath. This was maybe the hardest part to tell, and yet, the part that had messed up their lives before Sam had even been born, and the part his father had been worrying about. It seemed only right to start out with it. "And you were right that I had to die to stop it. But I took him with me."
