Donovan Plot - Part Three She had lost count of the days that they had been trapped in that house. It had been raining nonstop for the last two days. Sometimes she would stare at it through the balcony doors but tonight she could do nothing more than sit with her eyes closed. She was so hungry, there was just a constant pain in her stomach. The sessions (she couldn’t get her mind to admit to what it really was) were long and she often fell unconscious after awhile, only to wake up the following day to start all over again.
Where was her mother? Why were they here? What did they want from them? Why was this happening to them?
Why wouldn’t they just kill them?
She had cried the first few days, back when she had the energy too. She had screamed and fought against them. She had struggled and attempted to escape. She had done all that she could to get free. But now… she had given up, given in. She didn’t even know why her body kept waking her up each day. She just wanted to sleep. Just....sleep…
“Gia…” She turned at the sound of her brother’s voice. He had it worse than her. He was bloody and bruised, his beatings and sessions were ruthless. She was sure the dark circles under her eyes and weight loss was more noticeable on her than him though. His voice was what surprised her. They haven’t really spoken in days, but his held panic. “What...what day is it?” He asked her.
She didn’t know and responded with a shrug of her shoulders. The days blurred together now and she had lost track. “What’s wrong?” She asked, there was pain on her brother’s face when there hadn’t been shortly before. She moved to check on him, but he held his hand up and told her to stay back.
“You… you have to get out, Gia.” He said, his breath was coming out shallow as he struggled with himself. It was then that everything caught up to her. Her blue eyes turned toward the window, but the heavy downpour of rain kept the moon from being seen. Was it the full moon? Was he changing?
“Jax… what’s happening?”
“Run, Gia. Run! Get out!” He shouted towards her before falling to his knees and moaning in pain. Panic rose quickly through her and she realized that she was soon going to be trapped in a small room with a werewolf.
Gia shook the handles of the door as hard as she could, but the magical locks refused to budge. “Please let me out!” She screamed, hoping someone was on the other side or that she could be heard through the walls. Gia pounded and kicked at the door, trying as hard as she could to break them open. She knew it was of no use. She and her brother had been trying to get out since the moment they had been placed there, but she needed to do something or else someone was going to get hurt, or worse.
Her brother’s cries brought her attention to him and she watched in horror, as her brother’s body twisted and contorted in ways that no human body should ever have been able to do. His nose and mouth elongated to become a snout, his arms and legs bent backwards and lengthened as thick fur began to sprout from his visible parts. She could remember his screams when she was a small child, back when they had him locked up in the basement of their old cottage in Greece, hidden away in the woods where no one could hear them. But it had been so long that she had forgotten how it sounded.
“PLEASE LET ME OUT! PLEEEEEASE!” She begged, her knuckles beginning to bleed from pounding so hard on the door. “HE HASN’T TAKEN HIS POTION! HE’LL KILL ME!” She yelled, repeatedly, hoping against all hope that someone would care to save her. Her heart stopped from pure fear when she realized that her brother’s screams of agony had turned into grunts and snarls. Gia slowly turned from the door to where her brother had once been. There he stood on all fours, a wolf. His wolf. His demon. His curse. His cold blue eyes locked onto her.
“No, Jax. It’s me. It’s Gia!” She tried, speaking in Greek in hopes that their native tongue would reach him. He bared his teeth to her as he crouched low. “Please!” Gia cried, but that only riled him and the wolf pounced from his position coming at her ready for his treat. Her screams could be heard through the walls of the house before abruptly being cut off.
Gia had thrown herself out of the way and landed hard on her side next to the fireplace. The force of the land had knocked the wind out of her, causing her scream to cut off. She heard the wolf smack into the wall that was behind her. Hearing the snapping and snarling of the animal caused panic to flare in her once again and she desperately tried to crawl away and find a place of safety. Unfortunately, the wolf was down for long and he quickly caught wind of her. She felt a sharp pain in her calf, forcing another cry from her and turned to see that he had clawed her. Gia searched around for a weapon but could only find the fire poker nearby. Quickly grabbing it, Gia jabbed the iron at the wolf, when he got too close and began to push herself backward towards the balcony doors.
She watched as the wolf moved away from her, though never turning his focus away from her. She watched him move, the iron poker still held up in defense, but the wolf seemed more interested in the surroundings now instead of in her. Taking the opportunity to her advantage, Gia jumped up from the ground and attempted to run to the balcony door, only to be reminded of her deep scratch on her leg and nearly collapsed back down again. She didn’t have much of a chance though.
The wolf didn’t seem to appreciate her attempt at escape and angrily lunged at her. Thinking fast and out of sheer terror, Gia swung the poker and connected with the head of the wolf. The wolf collapsed in a heap at her feet. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry!” She cried, worried about her brother. He wolf was still breathing, so she tried to take that as a good sign. Taking the advantage, Gia hobbled to the balcony doors and slipped through it. The rain drenched her within seconds from the storm. She limped to the terrace wall and managed to pull herself up but was only partially over it when her brother came crashing through the glass doors.
He stood for a moment, smelling the air, searching for her. Gia didn’t move, she didn’t even attempt to breathe. She was in the corner, away from him, but it didn’t take him long to smell her and his cold blue eyes locked onto her. Gia sobbed in fear, “No Jax. Please don’t.” She pleaded, watching as he drew nearer. She pulled her other leg over the wall as the wolf crawled towards her. As she adjusted her feet, looking down to the ground several feet below, the wolf growled and lunged for her again. Gia screamed and blocked the blow with her arm. She screamed again as she felt the searing pain of his claws ripping into the flesh of her arm.
The blow left her unstable on the ledge, before she could fix herself and without any way of protecting herself from another blow by the wolf, Gia lost her grip and fell. Her scream echoed through the rain until she landed on the grassy surface, softened slightly by the rain. It hadn’t hurt as much as she thought it would, but Gia couldn’t figure out how to breathe in. Her mind was struggling to stay awake, staring up at the spot she had fallen from. The wolf peaked over the wall, watching her. Gia tried to move, tried to get away, but she could do nothing and eventually, she let the darkness take her.
