Nano Challenge 1 “This one’s all you,” Johnny’s friend called to him and Will didn’t need telling twice.
He paddled for the wave and went over the edge, his take-off perhaps a little late, but he got to his feet and swivelled his board. For a glorious moment he was gliding down the face, finally surfing the Mavericks after a great deal of preparation. But something was wrong; he was slightly askew on the board and didn’t have the right angle to hold it. Will tried to correct and adjust but it was too late.
There was no choice but to bail and he went down, the giant wave pushing him under and then dragging him around in vicious loop. For a brief moment he appeared at the surface but the cascading water quickly shoved him down again.
Will came up again for the last time before he was flung into the pit and received a complete mullering.
His leash snagged on a rock, tightening around his ankle, and he fought to make it to the surface but it was stuck fast just a few feet too short to make it.
The next wave barrelled through and its sheer force stunned him again. It was then that his last breath left and he stopped struggling. It was over.
