Sister talk
“Are you excited about meeting everyone?” Shelby asked from her seat outside of the dressing room.
“Terrified.” Fae said back through the door. This wasn’t much of a surprise. Shelby had been equally as nervous about her in-laws. Although, she had begun to integrate herself into their lives as soon as the betrothal had been announced instead of waiting.
“How are you and Arnold getting along?” She asked her little sister.
“Okay, I guess.” Fae commented, opening the dressing room door to show the dress. “He didn’t seem too happy with me when I told him I felt like the tag-a-long in our relationship because of how he and Arthur are together.” Fae explained, standing against the frame of the room, looking unhappily at her sister. “The thing is, I’m not wrong in my assessment of things.”
“How do you mean?” Shelby asked, setting the magazine aside to give her sister her full attention. It wasn’t very often that Fae had things to confide with, so Shelby was eager to hear anything remotely dramatized in her little sister’s life.
“Married or not, Arnold will do what his brother will ask of him.” Fae said. “Apparently Arthur’s leaving the country after the wedding. I doubt he’ll stay away forever and Arnold’s going to be completely lost without him around.” Fae didn’t think Arnold knew how to live without his brother around. She honestly felt that no matter what the situation was, Arnold would always choose Arthur over her. As two people just dating, Fae had been okay with that, but she didn’t feel it would be okay as a married couple. Maybe if they had a child, Arnold would hesitate in his choice, but otherwise, it would be his brother. There wasn’t anything Fae could do about it but live with it.
“Perhaps it’ll give you and Arnold some time to learn to be a family?” Shelby suggested. Fae didn’t comment on it, but looking at her, Shelby knew it was something she was hopeful for. Fae became easily attached to someone. Anything negative she felt about another person tended to be because she didn’t know how to handle her feelings and was worried they would leave her. This Arthur boy was someone who could potentially take away the person she cares for and it scared her. Shelby sometimes felt that way with Victor and only felt safe with him after they were married.
“I am so glad that Victor and his brother are not close.” Shelby commented after a moment and gave a laugh at the disgusted look on Fae’s face. “Why do you hate that boy so much?”
“He’s a pompous, selfish, egotistical, good for nothing who treats people will disrespect.” Fae spat out. “It was bad enough that I have to be sort of in-laws with him because of you but now I have to deal with him as my best friend’s husband!” She said the last word as though it were a curse. “She deserves much better. I think if there were better potential males in her class, she wouldn’t have looked twice at Preston.”
Shelby was surprised by any vicious feelings of hate her sister had. Fae had never seemed to hate anyone before, so Preston must have really rubbed her the wrong way. As well as being that enemy who was taking her friend away. “That dress doesn’t look right. Try the blue one on.” Shelby commented suddenly, not enjoying the peach dress her sister was currently sporting. They were picking out new outfits for Fae to wear when she started meeting Arnold’s family. Their mother didn’t want her going in anything his family might have already seen on her.
“I can’t wear this!” Fae exclaimed from behind the closed door.
“Show me!” Shelby called back. There were a lot of things that Fae didn’t think she could wear but that was because she was shy. Fae had hips and a petite frame. Most things looked fabulous on her. “Show it!” She said again with firmness. It was a voice she often used on her husband when he was whining about something. Fae opened the door with her arms crossed around her chest and looked around uncomfortably. “What’s wrong with it? That dress fit you perfectly.”
“It has cleavage!” Fae pouted, dropping her hands. Shelby wanted to correct her and say that Fae was the one who had it, the dress just allowed that to show and only a little. It was a sleeveless royal blue fitted dress with thick straps and a v-neck top. The neck line did not drop far down, but it was enough to see a hint of something, which was apparently too much for Fae. The dress fit nicely to her waist, showing how petite she was before flaring out and hiding her hips a bit. She was the classic look of a girl that most males enjoyed. “Wear it for a one-on-one date with Arnold. Show up in that, he’ll forget he even has a twin.” She teased, Fae rolled her eyes and closed the door.
They were silent for a moment before Fae’s soft voice came through the door, “Shel, when did you tell Victor that you loved him?”
Shelby thought for a moment, trying to recall when it was exactly that she said it. She didn’t think she had said it before their wedding, but they were so passionate about their relationship that there was a possibility she had let it slip out before then. “Sometime around the wedding.” She settled on.
“How did he respond?”
“He said it back, of course.” She said without much thought before looking suspiciously at the door. “Why?” She asked her younger sister. “Did you say it to Arnold?” Shelby leapt up from her chair with excitement and leaned her head against the door. When Fae didn’t immediately say anything, her excitement dimmed. “Fae? What did he say?” Shelby heard a sniffle and quickly took her wand out to get the door unlocked so that she could see her sister, who was still in the blue dress, but sitting down on the bench in the room. Shelby entered and closed the door behind her. Fae didn’t cry in front of people. Even as a little girl, she always ran into her closet or to her secret place in the gardens to cry if she was scared or upset. Looking at her now, there weren’t any tears, but it was clear she was upset. “Fae?” Shelby asked patiently.
“I think I said it wrong.” Fae finally said and only continued when Shelby said nothing. “I told him what I was worried about and then told him how I felt about it. He just seemed to get angry with me for saying anything at all.”
Shelby frowned, “You mean about how you worry about him running off with his brother and things?” Fae nodded. “I thought we had a handle on your anxiety? Are you letting it take over again?”
“Not on purpose and I even told him that I didn’t think they would happen, but only that I worried that they would happen. I don’t think he believed me. He was just angry that I thought those things at all.” Fae went quiet for a moment and Shelby let her work out whatever it is that she needed to. Talking was not something she did well. “He didn’t say it back.” She finally said in a voice just barely above a whisper. “He didn’t even hint to having those feelings towards me. He cares, I know that, but he doesn’t feel the same as me.” They had been dating for two years and friends since they were eleven, Fae felt that was adequate time to develop at least something for her that went beyond friendship.
“Oh, Fae Fae.” Shelby started, playing with her hair as she spoke. “He’s a male and eighteen. Talking isn’t something he’s going to do and I highly doubt he’s going to admit to anything deeper than he thinks you look pretty. If you ask for anything deeper, you’ll just send them into panic mode.” Shelby advised as though this was the most obvious of things. “Someday, he’ll say it, when he is good and ready. He probably didn’t even realize that he didn’t say anything back about it.” Shelby stood up and pulled Fae up from the bench. “You get attached too quickly and hurt too easily, Fae. We aren’t around to protect you anymore, so you have to do it yourself.”
Fae frowned, but she no longer looked as upset as she had a moment before. “I know.” She pouted. “I’m trying. I thought telling him my worries would help, but it made things worse.”
“It will get better. Marriage is fun, but it’s scary too. You’re still getting to know each other that dating doesn’t really allow you to do. You both will adjust and find something that works for you. I mean, Jaiden and I both did in our marriages. Hell, Jaiden’s going to be a dad soon, so it must be working out alright for him.” Fae cracked a smile. Out of the three of them, Jaiden had the only betrothal that was with a complete stranger. Both Shelby and Fae had ended up liking Eleanor and she fit right in with the rest of them, but there had been a large possibility that Jaiden’s life would have turned out terribly.
“So, what you are going to do is buy this blue dress, maybe a cute pair of heels, get all done up and make a date with your future husband. If you make him want you, he’ll want to marry you by next summer.” Fae looked doubtful. “It worked on Victor.” Shelby said with a shrug.
Fae kicked her sister out of the room and the two girls continued on with their shopping. At the checkout, Shelby noticed the royal blue dress in the buy of dresses that Fae was purchasing. She didn’t comment on it, but an amused smile played on her lips, proud of her sister for taking such a bold step.
