hello one and all! i just held freida pinto as "the mid-life crisis" so i'd like to introduce her to you all to get lines while i work on knocking out her bio!

padma malil is 32 years old and currently working at a book store as a clerk. she very recently (like in the last eight months) finalized a divorce from her husband of six years ([info]kristophr) because he came out to her and told her that he was gay. he's always known he was and married her because of his father's expectations of him. but that news essentially sent her spiraling (hence the mid-life crisis). so she quit her job and just started doing random, off the wall, very not like her jobs to try and find something she loved doing. think "eat. pray. love." without all the traveling and eating. she's originally from london, came to the states for a foreign exchange program her senior year and after she finished schooling she applied and was accepted to an american university and hasn't left since.

now, i could really use help figuring out what she studied in school and what the job she just quit was. she's a very caring, compassionate and loving individual who would give you the shirt off her back if she could, so i was thinking something in teaching maybe? i know there are a few of them around here, yeah? i'm honestly open to any kind of suggestion on that front. GOT IT. she studied electrical engineering and computer sciences at mit and after graduation she started working for a computer firm here in nyc, but decided that line of work was too cut-throat for her so she quit and started teaching computer science at james madison high school in brooklyn. i'm gonna say she started there around the age of 26, so she was there for five years before she filed for divorce in march of this year. at the end of the school year she decided she didn't want to work there anymore and quit.

i'd also really like to get all kinds of friends that she's made from her odd jobs. she's a friendly person who doesn't really judge a book by its cover so she'll talk to anyone at least once. people who introduce her to new things would be absolutely amazing as well! anything and everything you have to suggest do so! let's work it out.

Devon wrote a book roughly a year or two ago entitled Walvis Bay Contraband which was half fiction and half non-fiction which relates slightly to her situation. He wrote about how he identified mostly as straight then all of a sudden he ran into a guy that challenged his sexuality, his heart, etc etc. I say all of this to propose them meeting at the book store or somewhere, and maybe she identified him by the book? He's a radio personality/author/columnist. Think Dr. Drew's Loveline situation.

If that doesn't work, we could simply say they ran into one another at the book store.

no, i could totally see her reading that book and recognizing him from his picture in the back and striking up a conversation from there. the things in the book could be one of the things helping her to come to terms with it all and be able to forgive kris and talk to him again etcetc

He's much better at giving advice than taking his own, but he could always be an ear for her as well. Whether it's about Kris or anything else in life. He loves meeting new people and could definitely use friends around.

she'd feel awkward talking to him about it but after a few times of getting coffee might loosen up enough to say something? she'd love to be his friend!

He's a rather comical person to be around. He's theatrical in the way he talks with his hands (and facial expressions) so I'm sure she'll halfway be amused at him.

Ellis is 30 and also a transplant from London. She moved here ten years ago to go to Columbia and has a Masters now in Journalism and Sociology. Maybe they knew each other from 'home', even though Padma is a couple years older?

that could definitely work! do you know what her parents did for a living? i only ask because padma's dad was a doctor and her mother was a professor. they could know one another through their parents? she moved to the states 14 years ago, so when ellis came over maybe she and padma would go out on weekends for a bit of familiarity?

That's complicated. Her mom was a housewife who married someone else and started a second family when her dad left when Ellis was a couple weeks old. Her dad is a 'famous' journalist in London, son of some landed family, who hid the fact he had a kid out of wedlock. So I'm afraid the family connection wouldn't work :(

Quinten works at JPMorgan Chase in the marketing department. I doubt she'd be able to get a job in that department without the education, BUT she could have done an entry level job at the bank and they could have met in the cafeteria. While she worked there, he wouldn't have been as open with her (friendly, yes, but open no), but after she left they could have become closer.

that would be splendid! i'm going to need to make a calendar of the jobs she's had until now so i can keep track of them all but that would be awesome!

She could have been anything from a teller to a phone customer service rep... or even worked in an IT related field. Pretty much all of banking relies on computers now.

she'd probably do her best to stay away from IT because she's trying to get away from the computer aspect of it. so her being a teller could work!

that was actually one of the professions i had considered for her haha. she doesn't judge books by their covers because she's found that the inside is never what it seems so she wouldn't have thought anything of her career. i'd love for them to be friends definitely! what can you tell me about your girl?

oh damn, you should say she tried it out but quit after a day, lmao. kyra is 28 years old, originally from phoenix, and came to ny as a teenager. she basically had a crappy childhood/upbringing (her mother didn't even want to have her but was forced to and her step-father was an alcoholic) and ran away as soon as she had enough saved up. she wanted to be an actress but failed to get any kind of job and eventually was so desperate that she began basically being a mistress to wealthy men who paid her for her services. she's closed off emotionally, a little greedy, self-sufficient, fiery, and stubborn. she claims that she doesn't believe in happily ever afters and has only been in love once (they broke up six months ago after he proposed and she ran). she's sort of a lone wolf but considers her friends to be her family and would do anything for them.

ahahaha i can totally see that happening. she'd probably quit in the middle of a gig. just be like "i can't do this" and walk out lmfao. maybe they met through one of padma's other jobs and got to talking and just clicked? if pressed to tell her, padma would have explained her situation and why she's pretty much doing busy work jobs for the most part and kyra could have suggested giving her line of work a try. it might have taken a lot of convincing but i could see her agreeing to it (because what is a mid-life crisis for it not for stepping out of your comfort zone?) and then, like i said, walking out of a gig lol

Pretty sure you worked something out with Preston's twin. Obviously we need to work out specifics, but I'm not sure what you and Remy-s worked out exactly and how Preston might fit into that or if he does? Also, for the love all things shiny...your journal is amazing!

I'M EXCITED THERE IS A NATHAN AROUND you have no idea. but yes we basically worked out that he took her job when she left at the end of the year last school year. how long has preston worked there? padma's been teaching there for the past five years so it's likely they'd know one another.

ME TOO. Wait. What? :x haha. Preston has been teaching there for six years. This year is his seventh and his second teaching AP courses. I keep forgetting it, but he did his graduate work at night during the first four years teaching and because of getting his Masters, was granted AP Algebra II and Stat. He actually urged his brother to apply for the teaching position so it could kind of be a running joke that he was trying to run Padma off so his brother could take over?

ahaha i love that idea. and after remy got it padma would insist to meet him. she loved the kids and the class but wasn't in love with the job (which is what she's looking for right now: something to be in love with since what she was in love with isn't in love with her back) and she'd want to make sure they're in good hands.

First: These two need to be friends, so that they may wallow in all their Browncoat glory.

Second: When was she at MIT? Brandon here is a grown up child prodigy and got his first PhD there at 20 (in particle physics). He stayed on as an associate professor, one of the sciences I'm not sure which.

ALSO I would point you to [info]skoda he was also at MIT and is only a few years younger than her.

1) yes please! i wasn't entirely sure how to work in her love for joss wheadon and especially for 'firefly' into the line plea post but she is most definitely a browncoat and has thoughts of cryogenic-ally preserving herself so that, when the time comes, she can fight along side mal

2) she was at MIT from '97 to '01 so if he was still there as an associate professor when she went there they could have met that way?

ALSO: oh wonderful! i shall seek them out! there are a few others i need to find in here for connections lol

1) "Brownocat seeks other like minded individual for shiny adventures" would work. ALSO: I present you the Bedlam Bards with a Wash tribute song.

2) He was definitely still teaching then. I think he's been at NYU about five years now, maybe six. I have an idea that I would like to toss at you: When he was teaching at MIT he wasn't allowed to date students, and while some professors do, he never has. Maybe she flirted a little with him or he just admired her from afar, or both. Then fast forward to him moving to NYC, they run into one another and she's recently engaged/married. They've become friends in the mean time and we can just go from there?

1) that's exactly what the personal ad would have said and oh that's brilliant

2) i'm more than okay with that idea! she's a very friendly person which can sometimes come across as flirting so maybe it was one of those things where he wasn't sure if she was flirting or not and she wasn't sure if she was either? idk now that i'm saying that outloud it doesn't make sense lmfao BUT MY POINT IS that i think that's a brilliant idea and i'd love to explore it.
