Full Circle
I recall that first real meeting clearly, as if it had happened yesterday.
I was there to see an injured friend. He was there with his brother, who was fighting for his life.
The only two seats left in the overcrowded waiting area were right next to each other, and we were forced to sit side by side.
Of course, we gave each other hateful glances until he finally snapped at me for a reason which, looking back, was most likely rather silly. I defended myself of course, and I told him that we needed to step outside.
I was unprepared for the tongue-lashing I received. Normally, I would have stood my ground and told him just where he could go, but there was something in his eyes. He looked, well, broken somehow.
I should have laughed coldly and walked away. Instead, I did the last thing I would ever do under most circumstances.
I cried. Uncontrollably.
The last thing I expected was his arms enveloping me, his soothing whispers of apology and caring as he held me close in the hospital corridor.
It was at that moment that my heart was permanently taken from me, and we have been together ever since.
It was a long, hard road for both of us. Mother and Father disowned me when they learned of my relationship, and it was only the trust fund that my dear Aunt Prudence, the only relative who still considered me family, set up that kept me from being destitute. His own family seriously questioned his sanity, but eventually came around.
These events taught me a very important lesson: that money and status could not ever hold a candle to love.
We moved into the small flat above his shop in Diagon Alley, though he did not reopen his business. He said he could not do that without his brother there with him, and I could not blame him at all.
He spent his days at St. Mungo's with his brother while he recovered, I joined him much of the time. We did not have much to our names at all, except for each other. Another girl would also visit quite often, and I recall how his brother asked her to be his girl right from his hospital bed.
Soon after, they revealed the true nature of their relationship, that they were much more than brothers. I should have run away, and thought that it was perverted and sick. But I did not. All I could think was how right they looked together.
Eventually, his brother was released, and there were now four of us in that small flat above the unopened storefront.
After a few more months, he was back to where he was before he was nearly killed. The shop was reopened, and I was now employed as their bookkeeper and financial manager. The business was a success, and life was starting to look up.
The marriage proposal and subsequent wedding were small affairs compared to how things were growing up, but I did not mind. I could not have been happier, even if my parents were too proud and stubborn to be there for me. It was a double wedding, his brother and his new bride were by our side as we started our new life together as husband and wife.
That was ten months ago.
Lying exhausted in my hospital bed with my husband by my side, the Healer handed us our twin sons, saying they were perfect in every way. Tears of joy flowed down my cheeks as he kissed the top of my head.
A minute later, his brother was standing in the doorway, holding his twin daughters for us to see.
As I held one of my sons and one of my nieces in my arms, I realised that we had come full circle. The place where my fate was sealed was now the place where my family was started.
"I love you, George," I told my husband, before I smiled over at his brother, who was now my brother-in-law. "Fred, they are beautiful. Please let Katie know that."
"I love you too, Pansy," George replied, snuggling agaisnt me as Fred smiled. "I will, Panse. And I know she'll think the same of her nephews."
