All she wanted to do was go home and sleep for a week. Okay, maybe shower first and then sleep for a week. Lee was pretty sure that she stank of sweat and booze, the former much worse than the latter.
Her apartment was only a few blocks away, just a handful of minutes by rooftop. The wind felt wonderful: cool and refreshing, with just the right amount of moisture in it. Don't look down, she thought. Keep your eyes closed and enjoy this while it lasts. Just this little bit of happiness right here while you have it, because who knows how much time you'll have before it gets snatched away again.
But she looked down. And saw--what? Someone huddled on a nearby rooftop? Oh, hell.
She landed a few roofs over, turned, and jumped back. Yeah, it was a person. Just a kid, by the looks of her, a girl no older than some of her students. Certainly no older than Terry had been when--
"Hey, kid. Are you okay?" Her normally dismissive, abrasive tone was--well, less dismissive and abrasive. Concerned, even. "Need a lift home?"
