At the casual response, having been expecting something arrogant and tough in the remark instead of what he's been bestowed with, Matt had to keep his face from contorting in confusion. Instead he forced himself to be stoic and still. "Huh." It was all he could manage just then. Rose would have been stunned to see Matt at such a loss for words, being tongue-tied wasn't typical of the hero.
The sounds of the other man's footfalls were lighter than Matt expected, as if he weighed less than what his shadow portrayed. Interesting. "How long were you watching?" It was disappointing that he hadn't picked up on the stranger earlier, but it was fascinating too. Refreshing almost that now he had another goal to strive for.
Another cant of his head came in response to the question posed. Finally a small smile began to tug lightly at the corners of his lips, "Just your average bear." It was a joke, but it hit Matt that perhaps the humor would be lost on this one. "Human. Why is it always so important here what someone is?" He inquired rhetorically. Humans usually didn't ask other humans what species they were, and it was odd to be inquired of like that. He'd gotten it a bit on the island from before, but this had been the first taste of it here.
Slowly his fingers worked the billy clubs back into the slots at his hip and he waited for more questions.
