arbara laughed softly, and a touch unkindly, before she stopped cold where the sidewalk met the curb. A quick glance around, and Barbara took Steve by the hand and tugged him gently toward a vacant awning, a place a bit more private though they were still within sight of the public.
Once they were beneath the canopy and it was easier to talk in lower voices and be understood, Babs released Steve's hand and offered him a concerned look.
"I'm not going to stand here and try to tell you who your friends can and can't be, I'm not your girlfriend. What I will tell you is to watch your back. Where I'm from, Harley has helped me out once or twice, too, when the situations got sticky and it was better for all of us. On her own she can be reasoned with, especially when her back is against the wall. She makes trouble just for the fun of it, but she will turn on you in a hot second if Jack tells her to. Joker isn't anyone to mess around with." Her lip quivered absently, almost as if she might cry.
But the gesture was gone as soon as it had sprouted and Barbara sighed, "If she's helped you, she might still help you. But she will never go against Joker. Remember that when the chips are down, kay? She's hard to hit, and she's crazier than a bag of cats. Joker is worse. They've killed good people without so much as a second glance. Be careful."
