She only had him and he her. Some people might have believed that to be a sad thing, but not these two. It was how it should be, and somehow, Tony knew this was how he'd end up. It was better than being alone. Pepper was so much better than the depressing alternative.
Slowly, he ventured opening his eyes to look at her, and seeing her smile, he squeezed her hand in response, then brought their joined hands to rest over the soft glow of the reactor.
"Come and lay down with me. It's not daylight yet." Not that he would have known since Jarvis had kept the windows blacked out. He just knew that he'd awakened Pepper at a very early hour with his sickness, and she couldn't have been here that long. She needed sleep just as much as he did.
And there was nothing he wanted more in the world right now than for Pepper Potts to be held snug in his arms while he recuperated.
