His pride in her grew as she withdrew, feeling the strength rebuilding enough for her to stand on her own. It was inspiring, to be so close to her strength; so intimate, to be able to share it and feel it in this way.
He smiled at her. "Always." He hadn't expected nor needed the thank you, but it was part of her nature. It always amused him when she defaulted back to British politesse.
Then, her question. Request. He didn't hesitate. "If you think it would help, then yes. Of course." There was almost nothing he could deny Evey Hammond. He could still remember the first time he had met her, pacing a small hospital room, asking about blood drawing procedures in order to protect the people at large from the vampire. He had admired her then. He admired her now.
"Can I take you home first?" His smile touched his lips again. The delay would be moments only, they both knew, but seeing her safe and back home would let him know he had done all he could for one friend before turning to the next. Her strength and courage notwithstanding, it was important to Peter that she remain safe.
