He couldn't see her face, angled as he was, as behind the bathroom door as she was, but he could hear the sound of her heart beating. Expectant things hung in the air around them, as if the whole world were holding its breath. He knew that she was going to find what she was looking for, yet had the absurd hope that somehow she would not. That her eyes would glance over things in the closet casually, that she would not think to look on the shelf that was so high he had to climb to get to it, and that the bag would be shoved so far back even if she did, that she wouldn't see the shadowy bulk.
Instinctively, Aidan knew what she was going to find. His body worked apart from his mind, his muscles revolting their restraint.
"Stop." He said, tone harsh and demanding. His hand had shot out to shove the bathroom door aside so hard that it cracked down the center, the top part now hanging limply from the hinge and attached to the bottom with the barest of splinters. His other hand had moved to the linen closet door, shoving it closed again.
It was the violence of his actions that brought Aidan around again, knowing he'd probably scared the life out of Evey - Evey of all people, whom he didn't want to scare, not really. Evey who was only trying to help.
There was a sound that issued from him. A defeated and broken, singular word. "Fuck." and he pushed away from the linen closet and the bathroom door, retreating inward to where she'd already searched and planting himself firmly onto the closed lid of the toilet.
Even in the fog that he currently resided amid, Aidan couldn't bring himself to do anything to hurt the woman he loved. It didn't matter that it was a different version of her, and that if she should happen to die there was another. She was Evey, and Aidan loved every Evey. He was ashamed of himself, of his actions. His sudden strike and the broken door seemed like they'd been done by another, but Aidan's hand felt the sting of impact still. Tingling.
He buried his head in his hands and waited for her to make the discovery.
