This time, Evey let him go. When he ducked his head, she stepped back away from him, fists punched at her hips, and stalked back and forth in front of the couch - as if it could do anything to resolve this nightmare.
He didn't even know how many people he'd killed. This was not the Aidan she knew.
I am not the same person I was before I came here... It just so happens that we inhabit the same physical body. I know nothing about this man, but I know that if he genuinely cares for you, he cares for the continuity of you, not a snapshot of you at single moment in time.
The words she'd been stewing in for the last few days easily rose in her head in response to her own thoughts. Then what did that mean? She stared at the carpet. She loved Aidan Waite. She'd never stopped. And she also loved that stern and quiet human man who shared his home with her - a man, she thought, who could hold the title of 'monster' easily against his chest as well. Her hands dropped to her sides. Some of the anger sapped away with the movement - but not all of it - not enough to keep the fire from her eyes when she looked back at Aidan.
"I came to tell you to love her. Because she surely loves you. She deserves more than this." Evey sighed and grit her teeth. Then she said the truth that she knew, under the hurt, the abandonment, the loss, and the anger. "You do, too. You are so much better than this."
