Aidan didn't know who John Preston was, but he hoped that the man was somebody who could be trusted. Evey seemed to be... well, Aidan didn't know. He was unsure if this creature in front of him now was even capable of love. Or anything, for that matter, anymore. She was a shell of what she had once been, a hollow and empty thing. He felt that if he were to shout at her to snap out of it, his words would echo through her form, bouncing off the scarred insides of where her soul used to live.
She was right, that he loved the other Evey. His heart belonged to her, wholly and without question. The care and love he felt for the Evey here with him now was due to the other. When he looked at this Evey, he felt the whisper of a ghost, not the full and fleshy living love that he felt when he even thought of the Evey he'd been seeking this morning.
Her eyes went distant again, but for a different reason. She'd said that Peter was here, too. Aidan imagined that they were discussing things through the link they shared. He imagined that Peter was scolding her for something, by the look on her face. By the placid and very un-Evey way she gave in to everything.
No fight.
No spunk.
No fire.
No spark.
Aidan, feeling a rising anger due to the obvious fact that Evey had given up on life in all ways but the physical denouncement of the act itself, stepped forward and clasped her face in his hands, tilting her gaze upward so that he could look her in the eyes. She stared right at him. Through him, even.
"Evey Hammond." Aidan said firmly. "I have no fucking idea what happened to you. I don't know what's going on in your head... Peter if you're listening, this is wrong. It's all wrong... you have got to snap the fuck out of it. You have got to come back to yourself."
He was desperate now, sure that if he let her walk out the door something terrible was going to happen. He didn't think that Evey, no matter what version of her it was, would do anything to actively hurt herself, but he was sure that she wasn't whole. Unable to sustain the way that she was going. Spiraling quickly down the drain. All his years on the earth, and this he knew by sight.
