Aidan didn't think that he'd ever witnessed something quite so terrifying in his life. Even the memory of Evey near death in his arms had not torn him apart as much as this was. She was here, with him, alive, and yet...
There was nothing inside of her, or evident on her features, that spoke of a living creature. This was a being that existed because there was no current other way to be. He had seen it before, in vampires. Those who lived because their sire demanded they do so. They did not enjoy life, they found no pleasure in it. They had no interest in the world around them, no lust for new experiences. They'd given up in all but physical actuality.
This he saw in the version of Evey Hammond who he watched shut down and attempt to make her escape.
Aidan couldn't let her leave in this state. There was no possible way that he could live with himself if he allowed her to walk out his door - once she discovered the right one. Knowing she would get there sooner rather than later, Aidan hurried past, hurtling the couch, and stood in front of it. He didn't have to do anything but stand there, feet anchored hip width apart, knowing that she would be unable to move him, even if she pushed with all her might. He was reminded of the moment they'd shared in the bathroom when she'd tried.
Both of his hands were out, palms up, showing no threat, begging her to take a moment. "Evey." Aidan's voice was soft, worried "I can't let you leave like this. I'm concerned. I can't let you walk out of this door not knowing where you're going or if you're even alright. And don't you dare tell me you're okay, because I'll know you're lying."
He gestured toward the couch. Desperately, Aidan wanted Evey to take the cue and return to it. Perhaps curl up on it, sleep a while. Anything but leave as she was trying to now.
"Whatever else, Evey, whatever else messed up is going on, I love you. I want you to know that. I have loved you since before I left die Festung. I want..." to help. The best of everything for you. For you to be happy. For you to forgive me. You. You to smile. You to be Evey again. All of that he wanted to say, and more. As well as a twisting black worm inside of him that wanted to make it so this had never happened, it gnawed at him, causing him to wish he didn't know about this second Evey at all.
What a monster he still truly was.
"I want to help, however I can." He settled on it finally. "Just tell me what I can do, anything other than moving away from the door so you can leave, and it's yours."
