He put down the knife that he was using to spread peanut butter onto bread and moved closer to Evey. That part of him that responded to her wanted to wrap her up in a hug and hold he close. To let her cry it all out on him. Instead, Aidan kept his distance, not knowing what contact might do to her.
"I fell." He said. "I didn't die."
Aidan quickly recounted the story of the hole he'd fallen into. The trial of getting back up. He glossed over details that he was sure that this Evey would pick up on just as quickly as the other had. He didn't want to say them out loud now any more than he had before.
"I was trying to get to you. I never would have... never... ever left you by choice." He understood, though, that there must have been some lapse in time. He hadn't just crawled out of the hole directly after he'd fallen into it, she had lived without him for... for how long? A year? What had happened? What had she seen? "It wasn't a year for me..." As if that would help.
Unbidden, his feet took Aidan a step closer toward the Lost Evey. His hand reached out for her. The divide was still in his head, that this wasn't the same woman, but the one in his heart had closed. The love for her was there, strong. Seeing her cry, not just cry but shed tears for him, broke his heart. Aidan moved to wipe away those tears, unthinking.
