Now that Hannibal was helping to carry the weight, Erik could grab a torch on the way out the door. He did, hearing the younger man's words and laughing - a light sound, half disbelief and half mock.
"All yours," Erik agreed. "For what good it will do you." They were at the lake. Without prior agreement, they swung the body thrice and hefted it into the water. The body floated, but Erik turned away all the same. In a few seconds, this wouldn't matter.
But the assertion that Erik owed Hannibal anything turned Erik's attention briefly. "What is it that you think I owe you?" he asked, as he tread over the ground where he'd hidden his siren's call. From the surface of the lake, a disturbance, a high-pitched hum that sounded very much like that fabled creature, and then something caught the body and began dragging it away from the lake. A few seconds later, and the body disappeared from the surface altogether, though sharp eyes could see a current in the water that indicated the body was still moving, even under the surface.
