Evey didn't want to talk; it was the farthest thing from her mind. But then Aidan started explaining what'd happened to him since she last saw him, and some of the urgency died inside her. Her eyes grew grimmer as he explained the fracturing of New Troy. So it hadn't just been die Festung. Of course Aidan would've stayed behind to get everyone else out. Evey was one of the last out, herself - along with Peter. But when he described the fall, her hands tightened on him.
He was clearly all right, now - but the idea that he'd been hurt - he had to have been hurt - set off alarms inside her that didn't seem to respond to the logical evidence that Aidan was just fine despite what'd happened. His fingers on her face helped. It really helped. She leaned a little into it, all the while trying not to look desperate for it. "Are you all right?" she asked, needing to hear his answer even though her eyes were telling her that he was fine. "How did you get out?"
And now she was starting to remember that they were standing on the sidewalk in front of a cafe, putting on quite a show for whoever wanted (or didn't want) to look. Normally, she would have put some distance between herself and Aidan by now. Normally, she probably wouldn't have kissed him like that in the street. But the idea of letting go of him now was absolutely ludicrous.
