Glad to have his company, she stepped out into the night. Her feet touched pavement for the first time in her life. Kneeling down, she ran her palm across the concrete. It was impressive, like so many other things she'd seen so far.
"This is much different from what I remember from Earth," she breathed, standing and dusting her palm off with her other hand. Looking over her shoulder at Eric, she waited until he was able to stand beside her, then set off in a random direction, eager to learn more.
Trees lined the streets, which were empty. Streets -- that was new, too, and she ran her sandaled toe across the yellow lines painted on the black asphalt the first time they crossed over one. She eagerly soaked up every bit of newness around her - lamp posts, park fences, great glass windows of shops lining the streets, everything.
"It's cooler here," she said, after a while. It wasn't cold, but she'd grown used to the warmer climate of the pehistoric island where they'd been living. This city weather was far milder.
And then, thinking back to the island, she turned to look at Eric. "Ben is all right, yes?" she asked, thinking to be kind to him by asking after his partner.
