"Hello, Red," Beauty acknowledged immediately and politely. But some of the radiance around Beauty was almost immediately diminished. She set her sandals on the sidewalk and stepped into them, one by one. There was no more grass to run on, anyway.
Red still made Beauty wary, though she'd stopped feeling like she needed to run and hide. It was strange, very strange, to be facing the woman again.
"You're right, of course," she said kindly to the gentleman she'd stopped in front of. "I don't know what day it is precisely because I just arrived." She turned to Red and added, "I've been gone from here for about a year, now. It seems that the City has found me again - and not just me, but others as well. I suppose it doesn't seem like we've been gone, though - or you wouldn't have asked why I wanted to know about the day."
Beauty looked again at the man, positive that he hadn't been on the island with them, either. How very odd. But then he started asking all the questions that anyone who is new to the City began asking. She smiled and easily looped her arm in with his. "It's all right," she assured him, patting his wrist lightly. "This is a very good place to be."
