The sweetness of the candy overpowered everything; of all on the island that they'd eaten, the only thing that came close to this sweetness were the benanas. But this was twice as creamy, warm and sooty, and bright with its eye-popping sweetness -- sweetness so intense that it made her eyes water. She chewed the second piece, then looked up at Evey. Her eyes were far away. She shifted her gaze to Peter and saw him shudder.
They were doing it again - talking with each other without speaking. She wished that were part of her talents. It hadn't been engineered into her, though she knew it was possible with the right genetic modifications. Concern drew her to the kitchen, where she stood beside her mentor, her guide, and her shelterer. She broke off a piece of the chocolate bar and offered it to him, to try to smooth away the shudder she'd seen from him.
