Maxine slowly inched toward Wash, looking as small as possible and standing by the wall. At least it was easy to tell the two of them apart. The fake Wash didn't have any broken bones still mending. But even without the brace, all either of them had to do was open their mouth.
"No," she said. Perhaps sensing that she wouldn't be believed, Maxine protested, "I didn't! I promise! The City did it!"
If the City had been standing right there next to her she would have pointed at it. Maxine did not have anyone to point at, which was the five year old found frustrating.
