Oswin dropped the hadware nails from her fingers and heard them fall to the ground at her feet. The instructions that The City gave her were technical, but it wasn't the way that Oswin read them in this imagined world she'd constructed for herself.
Oswin turned her hammer around and began prying boards from the door, toward the terrifying voices of the daleks. She wished that Leto could see this, that he could be there with her at that moment.
By the time she had the last board pried from the door, the voices stopped. Oswin stared down at the handle and pulled it open.
At first it seemed to let in pitch black. Oswin couldn't see, and with her sight she was no longer able to feel her hands or feet. Everything she had carefully constructed vanished.
The shell started open in three places, the dome lifting upward while the middle of the dalek split into two. Oswin was blinded at first, her eyes unaccustomed to natural light after nearly two years of being converted.
"LETO?"
Oswin was only able to speak due to technological assistance, speaking mostly from her throat and her mouth remained half open in a useless gape. She wasn't the malformed slug with tentacles typical of a dalek, but a severely abused human head and neck, which her spine and other tissue repurposed to act as a dalek's tentacles would.
She was barely recognizable as the girl not yet awake on Leto's couch. Most of her hair was gone, her skin was badly scarred and pale. Bones had been broken. Oswin started to remember.
