Maxine spoke as if the answer should have been obvious: "No, I can't see them. They're all covered."
She walked with him fearlessly. Now that she was standing by an adult, she had calmed down. Her feet dragged her and eyes were half closed, but she didn't have to be afraid. Maxine wasn't the least bit afraid of the burly, gruff sounding man with the strange bones.
She put her hand in his.
"Usually The City just takes me home after school but this time it didn't," she explained. "My guardian Wash is kind of my new dad because my real dad isn't here. Wash is going to be a good dad but I don't think he knows what Christmas is because he lived in outer space."
