Errol did not normally carry around the cell phone that had appeared in his apartment one day several months prior. However, since receiving news of Beauty's kidnapping, he kept it on him at all times.
He was engrossed in a Neil DeGrasse Tyson book when his phone rang with the distinctive ringtone he'd assigned specifically for her, snapping him out of his book. But she was just... He checked the screen, realized that she must have stepped out for more than just a breath of fresh air, and answered the phone. She didn't answer, but he could hear noise on the other end. Voices. He listened intently as he closed his book and saw the envelope she'd left behind for him, clenching his teeth as he opened it and read its contents. He covered the phone as he approached the store's single customer. "We're closing early," he said shortly. "You're coming back tomorrow."
"But I--"
One look at Errol's face shut the customer up, and Errol was out the door within a minute. Never mind walking--he ran in the direction of Arkham, setting the phone to speaker to make sure that he could still hear her voice, even if he couldn't make out the words.
His coat flapped around him, out of place in the warm weather, but he'd taken to wearing it again. The pistols he'd taken off of a thug some nights earlier were a suddenly comforting weight at his forearms. He let them fall into his hands, checking the safety of each as he did.
Calm, he told himself as he approached. He needed to stay calm. A Cleric's strength was the ability to stay detached, to analyze the situation without really thinking about it, to not get carried away in the moment. He'd be no good to Beauty if he charged in and got himself killed before he could get to Crane.
He nearly didn't see her standing there until it was too late, her eyes locking on his. He was suddenly, acutely aware that he had pistols in his hands, his Cleric's coat buttoned to the throat like armor, and murder in his eyes. "You're all right?" he asked, not willing to let his guard down until he knew for certain.
