The Worst Boyfriend
It had taken Tony a while to notice that Annie was gone. He was too busy on the revisions of the suit he'd built for Wash, and trying to once again set up a system to chart the City's movements and power source.

It was only when he'd finally surfaced for a real meal, a shower, and a chance in clothes when he realized that he was missing something else. In searching the Tower for Annie he'd found the downtrodden arms in her lab, and when Jarvis confirmed that she'd been gone for a while Tony had set the AI on finding her.

First came the police reports, and then a hospital location. Tony tried her cell phone as he suited up, flying over as fast as he could, not wanting to wait in the traffic or risk anything catching up to him. The armor dropped him at the front of the hospital and then went to the roof on standby, and a moment later Tony was inside, not bothering with reception. Jarvis had hacked the system easily, and Tony was too riled to deal with any receptionist telling him he wasn't kin and couldn't visit.

He didn't knock, either, simply opening the door and walking in, spotting Annie immediately and freezing slightly. He was not used to seeing friends or loved ones in hospital beds. He steeled himself internally, then walked over, for the first time slowing his pace, moving to her side and slowly taking her hand. "What happened?" he asked, voice quiet with rage. Rage at whoever had put here, and an equal amount of rage at himself for not being there, or noticing that it had happened.

Annie heard a lot of commotion outside of her room. Nurses yelling. She was pretty sure it had nothing to do with her, right up until Tony appeared in her doorway. She was happy to see him, though a little bit annoyed as well. She decided that she wouldn't be outright mad until she heard his side of things.

His hand on hers made her feel a little bit better. Just touching him.

"I was leaving Fixit to go back to the Tower. There was a really weird guy. I tried to scare him off, but he just pulled a gun. All the details feel really fuzzy right now. I know I know them, but they've just given me my afternoon dose." Annie played with the sheet, not looking at him anymore. "I tried to call for you. I sent a message. I tried to send it through the watch, since I knew you'd have it on. Everything was going black, though. I don't know if it made it through."

Annie was also skipping over the details because she didn't want to relive them again. Just as she had with Fred, she was taking the avoidance tactic. If she could get out of all of this with only a few rehashings under her belt, she would be a pretty happy girl. She had a feeling, though, Tony wouldn't let this all go as easily as Fred had.

Tony stared at her, then shook his head slowly. He could see how upset she was, and he didn't blame her. He took out his phone. "Jarvis?"

"I'm not finding any records of recieving those calls, sir," the A/I replied. Tony closed his eyes for a moment.

"I'm here now," he said, reaching out and brushing her cheek, looking at her seriously. "And no force in this hellhole of a birdcage or any other universe is going to take me away. Unless you want a breakfast sandwich or something and we can't get ahold of the nurse."

By the look on Tony's face, it seemed that maybe she'd not gotten the signal to go far enough before she blacked out. That was okay. He was, as he said, here now, and that's all that mattered to Annie.

"I'd really like it if you just sat with me for a while. Food can wait." Annie smiled a little bit. "I'd actually like to know how everyone is doing at the tower. Are Arm and Waffle okay?"

If she could only pretend that she wasn't laying in crisp white sheets, recovering from holes in her body, for just a couple of moments, she was going to make the most of those moments.

He nodded, hooking the nearby chair with his foot instead of letting go of her hand to grab it, pulling it over. Before he sat he leaned over, kissing her forehead gently.

He sat, holding her hand with both his own, his thumb running over her soft skin.

"They're alright. They're why I knew something was wrong, they were moping in your lab holding your hair brush and your screwdriver," he said. "Got the brush but Waffle took off as soon as he realized I was repo-ing the stolen goods. You're probably going to need a new screw driver when you get back."

"Aw." Annie frowned some. The idea of poor Waffle looking for her and not being able to find her made her sad. "That's okay. I should probably get a new screwdriver anyway."

She said it as if screwdrivers went bad or something. Which, obviously they didn't. But she would have felt like a heel trying to take anything away from the little arm.

"You'll have to let them know I'm okay." She offered a little smile. "Which I am now, so don't you worry either. Just have a little bit of healing to do, then they'll let me out."

"Jarvis will make sure they're alright," Tony promised. He wasn't going to leave, not even to take care of the technology under his care. As far as he was concerned Jarvis could look after the AIs and Bruce could look after himself and his own.

He let out a deep breath, knowing Annie probably didn't want to talk about what happened, but there were some questions that just couldn't wait.

"The guy who shot you, did he give a reason why? Did you see what he looked like?"

Annie made a face, she really did not want to talk about things. But she supposed she needed to be a grown up about all of it and let it out instead of bottling it all up inside. Especially considering what had happened.

"There was no reason." She said that confidently. "I think we just happened to cross paths when he wished to do harm to somebody."

Looking back on it, it felt like it was all a stupid mistake. He hadn't even taken her money, or tried to do anything else. He'd just threatened and shot. And had, hopefully, been run over by a car or two in the process. And maybe he'd shit his pants out of fear. Annie didn't know if she was that lucky, though.

"I saw. And I'll never forget his face, as long as I'm alive."

((Maybe the third time I send it it'll go through? :P))

That settled it. Tony couldn't imagine Annie angering somebody enough to shoot her, if she was trying. If she said she hadn't done anything, then Tony knew she hadn't.

"Well, if he wanted harm he's got plenty coming to him," he said, voice low. He would find this man and rip in in half. He was fairly sure the suit would support the endeavor.

"Well, maybe when you're feeling better you can get the picture out and we can find him. Make sure he's sorted out," he said, then shrugged and reached up, stroking her hair away from her face needlessly.

"So, are you ready to ditch this scene? I know a well equipped spot where rest and recuperation include daily pampering, the best food, and all you can take of one of the best looking nurses around."

Annie nodded. She knew that she could use Fred's tablet to create an image of the guy she'd seen, even if there weren't photos of him on the internet or any other database. She could coax the little thing into letting her transfer the picture in her head onto it. Then Tony could see. But she was way too tired to do it right now, and she thought that there might be too many meds in her system, to boot. It would be better done if they waited, and she knew - really knew - that Tony wouldn't let it go until she did it.

"I'd like that." She said, of moving. Though she did like the idea of harm on that guy, too. Really, Annie just wanted to be home. Pampered some. Taken care of. Out of the hospital.

"I'm so ready to be out of here. And to have something to eat that isn't flavorless mashed potatoes." Annie smiled up at Tony. "Do what you gotta do, and let's blow this Popsicle stand."

Tony nodded and leaned in, kissing her lips chastely, then pulled back.

"I'll have to go make sure the bed's made up," he said, "Jarvis'll find a better ride. The suit'll want to take you, sure, but trust me. They're not fun if you're not put together inside of them."

He stood. He didn't want to leave her, but he consoled himself that it would, at least, be temporary.

"I'll be right back," he promised, then smiled. "Let me know what you're craving and I'll bring it back with me. You shouldn't move on an empty stomach, after all."

Annie nodded at what Tony was saying. He was going to take care of everything. She was going to be out of the hospital very soon. The prospect of that really excited her.

Fred had brought her tacos, but there was another food that Annie really wanted. Just thinking about it made her stomach grumble a bit.

"Pizza." She said, with conviction. "Pizza loaded with everything on it. Pizza so covered in toppings that it's hard to pick up and has to be folded over in order to handle."

Annie grinned a bit more. "And a giant soda with a whole lot of ice. They've been making me have water or orange juice only. I want fizzy bubbles."

Tony smiled. The idea of such a petite, graceful girl requesting the most ridiculous pizza available was one of the qualitities he was most attracted to in Annie.

"Got it," he said. He didn't like the idea of leaving her again, but he had to make sure everything was ready. He'd failed her pretty badly this time, and he wasn't going to risk letting her down again.

"I'll be back before you know it," he said. "Pizza and fizzy bubbles in hand. And then we'll spring you from the joint, even if I have to use a suit to blast through the walls."

He leaned in for one more kiss, then backed out with a wink. "But hey, do see if you can load up on the pain killers here. It's a real hassle trying to buy them for a mechanical laboratory."

He grinned at her, then turned, the expression falling away as he started running through the supplies already available at Stark tower, and the nearest and best pizza shop.
