Secrets did not sit well with her. He knew it. He also heard the trembling in the timbre of her beautiful voice - that voice he knew completely - and did not hesitate in telling her the secret he'd kept hidden from her until now.
"Enigma was in prison," he explained carefully. "The last time I saw her, she threatened..." He paused, then shook his head. He couldn't tell her that. He couldn't weigh her down with more than was absolutely necessary. "I offered to help her become better. In the end, she did become a different person, even going so far as to cal herself by another name and deny her actions from the past. In a careless moment, she lashed out at me, and I did not move quickly enough to stop her."
He caught his wife's hand.
"She's back with her husband, now. Actually, he came for her at the Opera House. That's why it was so damaged today. I lied to Mike. I didn't want to concern you with this," he gestured to his side, "Trifle."
