"Maybe they don't usually get sick." Annie shrugged. The idea of living on a thing that was also living was still kind of weird to her. "I guess we could try to find that out when we're looking at what's wrong."
She had no idea if that was possible at all. But it was an interesting thought. Really, she was more concerned with the idea of fixing whatever the problem might be. The City getting really sick, possibly dying, had a lot of terrible ramifications for the people living there. And for the first time in her life, she had a lot of good things going on. Annie didn't think she was ready to see the end of it.
"I'm sorry I can't be much of a help right now. They won't even tell me how much longer they think I'll have to be in here. The nurse just gives me this sad smile and says things like 'you'll be out before you know it, honey'."
