Jennifer scanned the files one more time. Her brain picking up locations and memorizing them.
"I just took this down, actually." She pulled the map out of the top drawer and spread it out. With a marker, she quickly marked out each spot where the murder had happened. According to this map, anyway. Who knew if streets had shifted or places had moved. "But there's no connection to the victims, no. Nothing alike in any way. Not even the same sex. Not hair color. Not eye color."
She'd at least gotten that far through the file, to see who the victims were. Looking at the map, Jennifer frowned harder.
"It doesn't look like there's any pattern at all."
Her head felt like it was floating away and filled with concrete at the same time. She was completely out of her element on this. New city, new people. This sort of thing wouldn't have happened back home.
Zoe wasn't a cop, but she knew her stuff.
"Listen." Jennifer said quietly, looking up at the other woman briefly. "I could really use your insight on this. You know this city, you know these people. At the very least, you know it all better than I do. If you'll agree to it, I'd like to deputize you."
