Jesse understood very well what it felt like to know there were other possibilities. If one thing had been different, the whole world would have changed around him. From the time he'd been little onward. If Jody and T.C. had never found them in that motel. If his parents hadn't tried to run away from Angelville. If he'd just killed Marie when he was old enough to know what needed to be done.
If Wash had stayed the first time he'd been sucked into the City. He wouldn't be standing here with Zoe now. In that vein, he, too, was selfish.
There was a little surprise when Zoe mentioned the scarf. He saw it as a bit of a joke. A vacation from himself. It was clear that she saw it as another thing, something horrible, and he'd had no idea she felt that way about it. Maybe she hadn't, either.
Jesse wrapped his arms around Zoe and held on tightly. "I promise, Zoe. I swear on everything I care about. I won't put that scarf on again. Not ever."
