"Prayed." Jesse nodded. "Even said that he weren't the prayin sort, but was doin it anyway. Thought I could help the situation with my bare hands on that one. Thinkin it was a car or a truck that was havin engine problems. I can do that one on my own. Then I pop in, and it's him, and a ship. No matter how cocky I might be about engines, I don't know my way around spacecraft."
He shook his head. "No, I don't understand. Not completely. All I can say is that this place does funny things to people. Look at you. Ever think you'd be security for a corporation like Wayne's? Ever think you'd be the fuckin Batman?"
Jesse wasn't trying to be cruel. He was doing his best to be logical. This felt like a logic kind of moment. Despite his lack of real understanding on things that had to do with logic, he was going to give it a go.
"Wash was lost, Zoe. He was here and he was flailin about because he'd lost you. The little girl gave him something to focus on. I doubt it has much to do with the fact that she's a kid an more to do with the fact that she needs him. You don't need him no more. Not fer anything. Sometimes, a man needs to be needed."
