"Well I know he's not here yet but he's gunna be. Only bad guys trap people and my dad is a good guy so he's going to untrap us."
Maxine was firm in her belief of the black and white nature of the world. She wasn't scared or lonely. She wasn't thinking long term of who might take care of her -- and why would she?
"I don't need a home. I can just wait here for my dad."
Maxine looked between both adults for their approval. She was fearless in a way only a child could be.
