"The thing is," Veronica began, "I'm really not all that surprised."
She smiled sadly.
"When he told me how it happened, why he was turned.... nothing about it was that big a shock. We've never had the kind of relationship where it's all smooth sailing. There's always been something, y'know?"
Why she was opening up like this was totally beyond her, but Veronica kept going.
"But you figure you always have more time, right? That if you love each other enough, you'll get it right somehow. And then... then one of you walks in without a pulse."
She really was sadder than she let on about the entire thing. It was creepy around the edges, but it wasn't fully showing.
"All the stuff about marriage and kids gets thrown out the window. And you find yourself talking about how to manage blood lust and other vampires who might want to hurt one of us." She arched an eyebrow at Bruce. "I miss the stupider stuff. The arguments about unanswered text messages and communication problems."
