A little less conversation... (Riddler)
Fred's building was on fire. The office, the apartment... Dinah was trying her best not to think about that. She and Dean had been on their way to the warehouse when they'd heard the call over the police scanner. Dinah knew that she couldn't just call this investigation off. Not with what was at stake for the City. She could, however, handle this part alone while Dean went to make sure that Fred was okay. She was worried that her friend wasn't answering her cell or her comm. She was worried that she might have lost yet another person that was important to her.

But she had a job to do. Whatever was going on personally, she couldn't let the people of this City down. She trusted Dean to check things out and find Fred if he could.

Once they'd gone their separate ways, Dinah headed to Enigma's warehouse. She easily scaled the security fence around the warehouse and dropped down to a crouch outside the building. She was quiet as she listened and watched for any signs of security or a booby trap. With Joker and Crane involved, there was a good chance that there might be something dangerous here.

Dinah had the gas mask hanging around her neck, ready to be put on at the first sign of any fear toxin. She crept forward silently, keeping to the shadows and keeping an eye out for any sensors or security cameras.

Edward hadn't bothered to set up any traps on the outside of the warehouse, considering that it moved as the City willed it to, and he was hardly there anymore. After the gunfight with Bruce, Eddie had been forced to re-locate to Arkham, not that he minded, but that meant he no longer used the warehouse as a base of operations, and was rarely there. Unless, of course, it was to blow off steam, which he had a lot of that he held inside of him until it was ready to burst. He was terrible at keeping things inside for too long, however, as things tended to be more dramatic with Eddie than they actually needed to be, but he couldn't help himself. He needed the production.

There were cameras littered around the outside of the premesis, but Enigma tended to keep more tabs on them than Eddie did, and Eddie was only concerned about one person showing up to the warehouse, and that person was Bruce. He secretly hoped that the scientist would be stupid enough to return to the scene where they had dueled it out, and if he was, Eddie would be ready for him. Eddie would kill him if he had the chance, without hesitation. If there was one person Eddie hated, it was Bruce, and the hate that dwelled in Eddie's tiny little heart for the Bat Man didn't even come close to the depth of the hate that Eddie had for Bruce.

So, Eddie had rigged the main floor of the warehouse so that anyone that stepped on the tiled floor would be severly shocked, hoping that Bruce would stumble in and be killed by the voltage that lurked on the seemingly innocent floor. Eddie knew full well that Bruce couldn't die, and although he hadn't met the Hulk, Eddie ignored the fact that the man harbored a monster and wished he could die like a normal person. That would make Eddie's year so much better.

Eddie stood tall atop a platform that was perched high above the floor, leaning against the gold cane that was his signature piece, fingers curled over the head of the question-mark that was the top of the cane, green eyes staring blankly at the floor below. Suspended almost at his level were two of Enigma's goons, the couple that thought they could outwit the evil genius, hanging by their wrists from ropes and a hook, both tied together with a chain. Eddie lifted his free hand, and pulled a lever, which began to lower the men towards the floor, ignoring their pleas and cries to be let go, that it would never happen again, and that they were sorry. All that did was bring a smirk to Eddie's lips, the first sign of life he'd shown outside of pulling the lever, as they descended slowly towards the floor.

In a matter of moments, the sizzle of the floor could be heard beneath the loud screams of the men that now had voltage soaring through their bodies as they had been lowered all the way to the floor. Eddie just watched, blank look having returned to his face, hand still on the lever that had lowered the men down. "Oh that's lovely." He breathed, the smell of cooking flesh reaching his nose, which caused him to laugh loudly. He moved the hand on the lever to a button on the panel, which turned off the electricity, leaving the men on the floor as they were, charred and now silent, sighing softly.

That was really a good way for him to release steam and stress, plus they deserved it for trying to double-cross him. There was always a penalty, or a price, and they had just paid it. Nobody messed with him. Nobody.

Dinah heard the screams and she yanked open a door to the warehouse. Fortunately, she also felt the pulse of electricity and heard the sizzling as the two people on the floor were shocked to death.

She looked up and caught sight of the man in green on the upper platform. Enigma had asked her to try not to hurt her father, but that was going to be damn hard when she'd just witnessed him murdering two people in cold blood.

Her mind raced as she realized that she had most likely been spotted or would be soon. She opened her mouth to let forth a scream. With any luck, the pulsing from her scream would kill the electricity surging through the floor.

If that didn't work, she would have to find another way inside and to the upper platform.

Of course, Eddie noticed the young woman that had thrown open one of the doors to the warehouse, allowing in the sunlight which seemed to interrupt the lovely mood Eddie had just been in. Count on a woman to ruin your mood. Enigma was so much like her father, it was almost as if they were exact replicas, but Eddie expected that of his daughter and wouldn't think any less of her.

The electricity on the floor was off, but if she didn't know that then Eddie had the advantage, moving the hand from the panel to one of the weapons concealed beneath his shirt, tucked under his arm, one of the golden question-marked shaped revolvers, pointing it at the woman. "Don't move, or I won't hesitate to kill you." He said, straightening up his frame, hoping she wasn't as stupid as Bruce was.

Of course, Eddie had no idea she was the Black Canary, he knew of her only through Jonathan but they had never met, so he was about to learn a hard lesson about the heros in this City, but perhaps it was one he needed to learn at some point. It would keep him alive later.

Dinah stopped where she was. She wasn't stupid, though she did have a few tricks up her sleeve. She was a little surprised at the apparent lack of recognition, though that could work in her favor. She would rather not wreck the factory entirely but if she had to use her scream to cut through the steel, she would.

For now, she was going to try to negotiate.

"Your daughter made me promise not to hurt you unless I had to. So this will all go a whole lot more smoothly if you come down here and negotiate."

Eddie knew of the Black Canary, but the one from his time looked different and so upon first glance Eddie had no idea that this woman was in fact the Black Canary, she just seemed like some meddlesome woman. Jonathan had told Eddie, however, that Dinah might find any information he had to be useful, her or Lois Lane, but Eddie was only familiar with Lois and not Dinah. If Jonathan had been here, he would've probably pointed out that this was Dinah and that Eddie could talk to her without all of the rigmarole that was now presently occurring, but Jonathan wasn't and Eddie was going to have to figure it out on his own.

"My daughter told you not to hurt me? Oh that's cute." He said with a laugh, pulling back the hammer of the revolver, which loaded a bullet into the chamber, to show this woman he was serious about shooting her. His ego was much too massive to just give up so easily, but he wasn't above persuasion. "And just who do you think you are coming in here trying to negotiate anything? I should just kill you right now for trespassing." He said, grumbling at her in irritation from being interrupted.

Dinah sighed. She'd given him his chance and his warning.

"I'm the Black damn Canary," she said, shoulders straight and head held high as she let loose another scream, this time directed at the supports on the platform. She was relatively certain that the floor was no longer electrified since the bodies in the middle had been left unshocked for awhile.

She was also sure that he would survive the platform collapsing. She'd taken a moment to study it and predict how it might collapse. It wasn't a far distance and the platform coming down wouldn't bring anything else with it.

Eddie wasn't one to take orders from anyone, especially when it was on what he considered to be his turf, Black Canary or not. Not even the Bat would be able to get him to cooperate in this place. Not that he was typically cooperative to begin with.

"I don't give a damn if you're the Bat!" He snarled, before hearing her emit the scream. His face contorted from the sound, finding it to be loud and dreadful. The platform beneath his feet that was once sturdy began to sway, and Eddie's eyes widened a little, before the platform itself toppled over. He leaned forwards, jumping with the collapse of the platform, landing in a painful crouch on the floor. He was still in recovery from his fire fight with Bruce and he was almost completely healed, though he definitely didn't need to be doing acrobatics.

His leg began to throb painfully, causing Eddie to reholster his gun, growling at the sensation that coursed through his limb, his fingers gripping the now righted cane hard, standing up slowly. He wasn't in any shape to be fighting and Jonathan was going to be upset with him for being so active, and for leaving the premises of Arkham.

Eddie glared at Dinah, standing there, trying not to show her his pain, frame tall with his shoulders back. "All right, Canary. What really brought you here?" He inquired, just wanting her out of his sight.

Dinah felt a little twinge of guilt at breaking her promise to Enigma, but the man had pointed a gun at her. She took a moment to consider that maybe Dean had a point about her costume. It might not be a bad thing to have some sort of kevlar instead of the fishnets. Not that she'd admit that to her boyfriend, but it might be worth it to consider a change to something that provided a little more protection when it came to bullets.

She strode toward the man, closing the distance but keeping her eyes on his hands, just in case he went for the gun again.

"I'm looking for the gas that Scarecrow and the Joker have been stockpiling," she told him. Enigma had made it seem like he wasn't a part of the plan, though she had no doubt that he knew about it. "And apparently witnessing a murder."

She shifted her eyes pointedly to the two people in a heap on the floor. Dinah took a very black and white approach when it came to human life. She didn't like people playing executioner. Not on her watch.

He had drawn his weapon on her because she was on his property without a good reason, and the thought of killing her had crossed his mind but Eddie wasn't a killer by nature. At least not out of cold-blood, he needed a valid reason and then there was no holding back.

When Dinah closed the gap between them, Eddie shifted, glaring coldly at her. Boy was she annoying. He hoped for her sake she was at least smarter than she looked. Who walked around a town like this without wearing anything remotely bullet proof? Well Eddie did, but he wasn't going to admit that to her. If she wanted him to talk, she was going to have to start playing by his rules. This was daddy's game.

"That information doesn't come easily, beautiful. You're going to have to make me a deal first." He replied, unwilling to let her have intel so easily. "Leave the scarecrow out of this, and I will give you the joker." He said, before smirking at her a little, "you and I have something in common, you know. We both want to see the joker pay."

Dinah took a moment to think about the terms of the deal. She didn't like Scarecrow, but she wanted to make sure Joker was off the streets first.

It was interesting that this was the second time in about a week that a member of the Nigma family had asked her to spare someone. She wasn't sure what to make of the Riddler's request to keep Crane out of this.

"If I leave him out of this, how do I know that you two won't just go ahead with the plan without the Joker?" she frowned. "I need to make sure that the toxin's destroyed as well as making sure that the Joker is behind bars. And not just in Arkham," she added.

She didn't trust Arkham to hold Joker. Not with Crane in charge. And even if he weren't in charge, Arkham wasn't enough.

Nothing could happen to Jonathan, especially when Eddie could get him out of it. Eddie would never admit it openly but he loved that man, and he would do anything for him. They were partners in both senses of the word, and though Jonathan may be willing to give Eddie up, Eddie couldn't throw Jonathan under the bus and expect the man to forgive him later for it. If Jonathan was safe, Eddie would talk. If not, then Eddie would be spending the night in jail, but he would at least try to get Jonathan off the hook.

At the mention of carrying out the plan with the joker, Eddie laughed hard, as if she had just said the punch line to the funniest joke he had ever heard, sighing softly in amusement before looking at her, shaking his head, "My dear girl, I hate the joker. He did unspeakable things to my daughter and that is unforgivable. I would kill him myself if I had the chance." He explained, still grinning. "I'd like to see him pay for what he did."

Dinah raised an eyebrow at that statement. It seemed that both of the Nigmas were against the Joker.

Seemed being the key word. She couldn't help but wonder at just how easily they were giving up information. It didn't help that in her world and her time, Edward had killed his daughter. She didn't think there was any love lost between the two of them.

"If you want him dead, why haven't you killed him yourself?"

It wasn't that she would condone the behavior, but she couldn't help but wonder. And with the Joker, it was hard to find arguments for wanting the man to stay alive. In the very darkest recesses of her heart, Dinah very much wanted to see him dead and gone.

"If it was that easy, Ms. Lance, I would've done it already. There are things in the works in this city that you don't know about, and just going to find Jack in hopes of killing him is almost a difficult task in itself. I'm sure it could be done, but I'm in no shape right now to do it. Getting him off of the street, however, serves as enough right at this moment." Eddie explained. It wasn't so easy to kill Jack, especially since Jonathan was working with him, and he wouldn't put Jonathan at risk if he failed in his attempt to assassinate the clown.

They were all criminals and at some point they all were a benefit to each other, but those times were few and far between so Eddie wouldn't mind seeing Jack die by his hand. It would be easier, once the man was gone for good, but the task itself wasn't.

Dinah frowned. She still wasn't sure how much she trusted Edward's word on this, but that didn't mean that she wouldn't hear him out. It didn't mean that he was automatically lying about everything.

And if he wasn't lying and there were other things in the works that might protect the Joker, they were all in a whole world full of trouble.

"What else is in the works? I want to stop him too, so whatever you can tell me could help."

"I'm not telling you anything without you giving me your word that Jonathan will be left out of this. Otherwise you can take me to jail right now and you can find Jack on the own and hope you stop him in enough time to save everyone." He said to her, unwilling to budge unless the rules of the game were set.

He wouldn't tell her everything, there wasn't any fun in that, but he would tell her what she needed to know in efforts to save the city. If Jack found out that Eddie ratted him out to the good guys, there would be a blood bath in the warehouse and it would be all over the hands of the clown. Eddie knew Jack was dangerous, not to mention completely insane, and while Eddie was okay with city wide domination, he wasn't going to let Jack get away with pulling the most diabolical plan ever. Especially when jack hadnt even asked Eddie if he wanted in. Criminals had codes, and jack wasn't exactly the best at following the rules. Granted, Eddie wasn't either, but at least he tried not to overstep his boundaries. Tried, being the key word.

Dinah didn't answer right away. What was she willing to promise to get information that could put Jack away? Was she willing to turn a blind eye to the things that Crane was doing in this City? Or to the murders that Nigma had just committed here?

"What do you care if Crane is locked away for this?" she asked, frowning.

It appeared that either there was honor or some other attachment among thieves. She wasn't sure which, and she wasn't sure which scenario was least concerning.

"I certainly can't have my best friend and partner sitting behind bars, now can I?" He replied, offering Dinah a small smirk, "He and I are almost inseparable, it would be like losing half of myself if you took him away." Eddie explained, which was hard to do because he had never really had to explain his attachment to Jonathan before. Their relationship was something undefined by words, it simply just was and they went with it exactly that way. "Lets make this easy for you. He's the step-father to my daughter. She can't be without him."

That was all he could really say about it. He would never admit to this woman that he held love in his heart for Jonathan. It just wasn't something he could ever actually do. His ego wouldn't allow it, but he hoped she was smart enough to take the hint, and was smart enough to want to put Jack away for a long time.

Now that was news to Dinah. She was silent as she absorbed the implications of Crane being Enigma's stepfather. She wasn't stupid and she could connect the dots just fine. Even if he hadn't mentioned love or affection, it was clear that something along those lines was there.

Dinah wasn't comfortable with the idea of those two being connected. The more villains that worked together, the worse it usually ended up for whatever city was at stake. She didn't doubt that that was a concern here.

"And what happens if the Joker is taken out of the equation? Will Scarecrow go ahead with the plan? Will you help him? That's not acceptable. On either counts. If I agree to leave him out of this, that means that he needs to leave the people of this City alone. I'm not going to stop the Joker and turn my back to any other crimes that the two of you are committing."

He didn't care what Dinah thought about who he was or wasn't carrying a relationship with, he only cared about making sure Jonathan wouldn't go to jail, even though Eddie knew that he had a role in this plan.

He listened to Dinah, before laughing softly at her, shaking his head, "No. Why would we go through all of the trouble of framing Jack and carrying through his plan? It would just be easier to let him so what he's planning and sit back while it happens." Edward replied, amused by her. "I can say that neither Jonathan or myself, at this current moment in time, plan on aiding the clown. I hate him, and I can say that I will probably never be part of anything he's involved with. Besides, he didn't even ask me to participate." Eddie said, pouting at the last part. Why did Jack get to have all of the fun?

"Your city will be safer with him off of the street. But you do realize that I am a criminal, you and I both know that. Something is bound to surface at some point in time, and I can't tell the future on wether or not I will be involved in any of it. Currently, I'm still not in a spot where I can actually do much of anything. I'm recovering, you see, and I would only get in the way right now."

Dinah nodded to the bodies on the floor.

"So killing two people is what you do when you can't do 'much of anything?'" she asked. "I'd hate to see what you're like at full strength."

She sighed.

"I can't just let those murders go, but if Crane stays out of this fear toxin thing then I won't apprehend him for that. Anything he does after this is fair game though."

She didn't expect her terms to be accepted, but she couldn't just let the murders go. Nor could she look the other way while Crane and Nigma hurt the residents of this City.

Eddie looked over at the charred corpses, shrugged and then returned his gaze to Dinah, "No, that's what I do when they think they can double cross me. If you don't teach them a lesson once in a while, they're liable to do as they please. Can't have that."

"Fine. Jonathan is yours if he screws up after that." Eddie said, nodding. "He and Jack were planning on releasing the toxin on the city. Jonathan has been supplying the fear toxin to Jack. Anything after that I'm not aware of. I don't even know where Jonathan stashes his supply, he doesn't tell me and I don't ask because I don't care."

"I already worked that much out based on what Enigma told me."

She squared her shoulders and readied herself for the fight that would most likely come with the next part. Since he'd at least attempted to give her information, she thought it was only fair to signal that she was done talking unless he had more to share.

"Now I'm going to have to take you down to the police station. They'll figure out what to do about these two," she said with a gesture to the bodies.

"I can get you into Arkham, but that's all I can do after that point." He replied, before watching her tense, knowing she was going to try to take him in for the murder of the thugs. He smirked, lifting his cane up, swinging it at her, hoping to land a hit.

Edward wasn't in his prime by any means, but he could still get around and if there was a fight to be had, she was going to get it.

She did watch as Edward lifted his cane and started to swing. She dodged easily-years of training had taught her to do that much. He was about to find that the cry was just one thing that she had in her arsenal.

She used the momentum that went with dodging to drive her first toward his face.

"If Jonathan knows you're not there to take him in, I doubt he would have any reason not to keep you there." Eddie replied, but he wasn't exactly sure what to say on Jonathan's behalf. He certainly couldn't guarantee Dinah would make it out alive but that was the risk she was going to have to take if she wanted access to the building.

When she dodged the swing of the cane, Eddie grumbled, before being hit in the face himself by her fist. He stumbled backward, slightly, from the impact, now very irritated. "You are starting to become quite annoying." He growled, sliding a second gun from within the holster beneath his arm, one that matched the one he'd had before, firing a shot at her after pulling back the hammer with his thumb. Eddie was a pro when it came to shooting, but of course she was quick and probably just as seasoned in dodging bullets.

"Just annoying?" Dinah huffed out as she whirled to dodge the shooting. In some ways, it was a lot easier to know where he was pointing the gun in close quarters like this. That didn't stop one of the bullets from grazing her leg. She bit back any shout of pain and instead pressed on in her attacks. Her first aim was to disarm him, so she struck out at his hands. Once he was disarmed, it wouldn't be difficult to take him out. Not when she had two decades of training in hand to hand combat of several styles.

"I'm pretty sure I'm insulted."

After all, it was her job to be a thorn in his side-and the side of others who disregarded the law.

Annoying, in the way, it was all the same to Eddie. She was almost as bad as his own kid, and Enigma was definitely way more annoying than Dinah. At least the Black Canary was committed.

He continued to fire at her, feeling triumphant when one of the bullets grazed her leg, the gun flying out of his hand the next moment as Dinah disarmed him with her amazing combat skills. Eddie growled, swinging the cane at her again, this time aiming for her legs, hoping to at least knock her off of her feet.

This was going to get old, quick, and he had other things to do besides let her drag his skinny butt to jail.

Dinah jumped to avoid the swinging of the cane and then launched another attack. She had better things to do than fight the Riddler herself. She had a City to save, assuming she could find a way to save it.

He was right about one thing though-Dinah was committed. You didn't stay alive as long as she had if you weren't determined to succeed at what you did.

She felt bad that she had most definitely broken her promise to Enigma, but there weren't a whole lot of options for finishing this without violence. Not with the way it had started off.

Eddie dodged her attack, having combat skills of his own and more experience fighting than she had in years she was alive. He was much older than she was, and he definitely wasn't new to the game. He may not have been in prime fighting condition, but he would manage.

He lifted the cane, swinging it as hard as he could in her direction, meaning to hit her with the strength he had left. That was the only way he saw getting out of this mess.

He was committed as well, but to different things, and he wasn't about to let Dinah Lance stand in his way.

The Riddler was good at this. Dinah had to give credit where credit was due. He was giving her a run for her money. She almost didn't see the blow with the cane coming in time. Almost.

She raised her arm to parry the cane and threw forward with yet another set of attacks. She really hated using her scream if she could avoid it, but time was getting short and that was in the back of her mind as an option.

She wasn't going to lose this fight. Not now.

He frowned as she dodged the blow with the cane the last minute, before re-focusing and swinging at her head with the butt of the empty fun hoping to at least stun her for a moment.

Of course, that was before she had begun to lash at him with a series of attacks, most he could dodge using the cane, although a couple did hit him, causing him to take a few steps back. He wasn't in any shape for this, but he wasn't going to just give up and let her take him to jail. He was going to give it everything he had.

He hadnt forgotten her scream, and he hoped she wouldn't have a chance to use it.

There was a certain ferocity to the Riddler's movements now. He was injured, but so was she. He wanted to win this fight just as much as she did. Possibly more.

"You know, I really didn't want to have to break my promise to your daughter," Dinah said.

She finally realized that she would cause less damage if she just let out her scream and knocked him out. Sure, he would wake up with a headache of hangover-sized proportions, but nothing would be broken.

She opened her mouth and let out a loud shriek that should knock him unconscious.

There was ferocity in everything Eddie did, or at least there was in his opinion. He didn't do anything without passion and aggression, which was why he had lasted as long being the way that he was.

"Well it's too late for that, and it's not like she expects you to keep it. Nobody keeps promises anymore." He replied, smirking at her. Enigma was a child anyway, promises to children often had no follow through.

He hadnt expected her to use the scream, and when it came it knocked Eddie off of his feet, sending him unconscious to the floor. He lay there on his back, legs and arms spread, a gun laying on one side and the cane on the other.

Dinah looked down at Edward's prone body, his last words striking a nerve. She kept her promises whenever she could, as best as she could. Not that that helped in this situation.

She glanced once more at the pair of dead bodies and felt a surge of guilt at not being able to give this more attention. She had places to be and while giftwrapping Edward and leaving him on the police station doorstep would have been ideal, the best she could do was handcuff him and call in a tip to the department.

She headed back to her car and found her first aid kit to wrap up the wound where the bullet had grazed her. Better not to bleed all over the place if she could help it.

Oh, she was going to hear about the fishnets all over again from Dean after this. She just knew it. There was the faintest of fond smiles at that thought, even if the smile faded as soon as she turned on the car and heard the audio of the news report about the fire at Angel Investigations. She didn't remember bursting into tears, but they were streaming down her face as her fingers fumbled to get the car started.

She still had a job to do, and she would do it. That didn't change the fact that she'd lost a friend and she would take the time to mourn for her as soon as the City was safe.
