"You always hurt the ones you love. That's the saying. And, he has. Or he said something along those lines." Simon just sat there watching her. Maybe somewhere inside, he wanted to push her, wanted to see if she could hurt him. It was sick and twisted, but he was tired of being soft, of worrying about her, of doing things to make her happy. If she was "fixed", then she'd have to watch herself wouldn't she?
"Then again, the key word would be 'love'. And you are one, River. A suspect. We can thank the Alliance for that. So, are you here to threaten me? Tell me never hurt your boyfriend again? Can't promise that, River. If he didn't commit these murders, then I will act as witness. If he did, I will do what I can to make sure he never hurts another person again. Same for you, River. I can't protect you if you ever commit murder, cold blooded murder. I just can't." He wanted to protect her from the world, and he was finally admitting that maybe he'd have to protect the world from her.
Simon still had tapes to go over, notes to look at. Funny thing, all he wanted to do was relax, do his job, help people, see a certain newcomer, maybe search for a misplace friend. He didn't want to play detective, and he certainly didn't want any of this to do with River, well, the detective part anyway.
