Jesse felt the eyes on him, and for a minute tried to persuade himself that he was just being paranoid. It wasn't actually happening. He was just self conscious because of the way his face looked. But when he scanned the other patrons of the cafe, he realized that there was somebody looking at him.
Intently, actually.
When he saw the newspaper, Jesse realized what must be going on. The article that Lois had written about him had gone to print. He might have thought to look for it and save a copy if he were that kind of vain. However, his vanity took other routes.
He smiled and acknowledged the stranger's gaze, and then nodded to say that yes, it was him. He motioned to the seat across from him at his table, inviting the curious to come question. He didn't doubt that there were questions.
