Verse For a Certain Dog (Open)
The pack of teacup bulldogs were getting restless cooped up inside the farmhouse. It was close enough to Maggie's farmhouse back home to be familiar to them, large and with plenty of room to run around, but they weren't happy with only being let out for the necessaries when there was a whole new world to explore. Or so Maggie gathered from their increasing resistance against coming back inside.

She supposed that she felt up to trying to take the better-behaved of her teacup bulldogs for a walk. It would be a good test of her recovery, in any case. The dogs were small--about the size of a particularly overweight housecat each--but energetic in small bursts. The innate laziness of the breed had proved helpful to her as she recuperated from the gunshot.

So Butch, Kitty, and Cujo were harnessed and leashed up and taken out. Just a few blocks and back, Maggie decided. The bulldogs tugged on their leashes, snuffling happily (and noisily) at everything they saw.

Of course he wasn't going to claim that he was attached to the stocky, fun-loving English bulldog, but he was. It was obvious. Edward simply adored the dog that his daughter had named Jaq-jaq, a name he didn't quite understand, so Eddie had taken to calling the dog simply just J. This was a unique bond indeed because Edward was basically incapable of loving anything that breathed oxygen and yet he found himself inseparable from the dog.

He had even purchased a tiny green bowler hat for Jaq that matched his own.

Currently, Jaq was skateboarding casually down the sidewalk, with Edward walking not too far behind the canine, making sure he wasn't going to fall into the street. That wouldn't be easy to explain to Enigma at all.

Edward was wearing a black button up long sleeved shirt, a green vest with gold, sparkling question marks littering the fabric, green slacks and green shoes. And of course his signature green bowler that matched the one that Jaq was wearing. It was almost adorable, or would be at least if Edward was even remotely sane.

"Careful J." Edward said aloud, though the dog was obviously a good ways away, enjoying the skateboard very much. Edward was glad that the dog was having fun. It was hard being cooped up in a place with walls all day, and Eddie could more than sympathize.

Poor things. The both of them.

The bizarre outfit didn't even register for Maggie. Her dogs, relatively well-behaved up until now, tugged frantically at their leashes, throwing their tiny round bodies toward the smell of new dog.

What did register for her was the apparently purebred English bulldog that Butch, Kitty, and Cujo were trying to snort to death. She gasped happily, but held firm to the teacup bulldogs' leashes. Maggie was positive that her dogs were well-trained and well-socialized enough to not attack, but she couldn't say what the other dog would do.

"Is he gentle?" she called, her eyes glued on the bulldog. A real bulldog. She had only seen them in pictures.

Edward was much like a peacock in the sense that he liked to stand out, no matter where he was, a casual stroll in the park with his dog, or a gala event thrown by societies best. It didn't matter what anyone had to say about his attire, either, he was the only one that mattered when it came to voicing opinions about things. His ego was far too large to include anyone else.

Eddie stopped walking, after catching up with Jaq, looking down at what seemed to be very tiny dogs. Or maybe he was just really tall. He wasn't exactly sure. All he knew, is that they were too adorable and he couldn't help himself. He scooped up one of the tiny dogs, held it up at eyes view, examining it. He had never seen a dog so small. How cute!

"Huh? Oh yeah...." Edward replied to the young woman, nodding absently at her, before cradling the tiny dog in his arms. "I have never seen dogs this tiny." He said to her, Jaq the bulldog looking up at the new face with a grin, two paws on the skateboard, two paws on the ground. Jaq snuffled, stub of a tail wagging merrily.

Cujo squirmed in the stranger's arms and made a happy noise that sounded like a wet whoopie cushion, drool flying everywhere.

Maggie, torn between wanting to reach out and pet the new dog and concern for Cujo, looked between them like they were a particularly engrossing tennis match before deciding that Cujo was in no danger for the moment and crouching down in front of the English bulldog, reaching her hand out in front of her for him to sniff. Butch and Kitty swarmed the larger dog, making more happy snorfling noises as they sniffed him inquisitively. "They're teacup bulldogs," she said. "The product of irresponsible breeding, as you can probably hear. I've been rescuing them for years. Please be careful with him; he has health conditions. Is your dog purebred? What's his name? I've never seen an actual purebred bulldog before."

If Edward had one weakness, other than sex, it was cute dogs. He couldn't help but hang onto that one, without even knowing its name, brushing his long fingers over its tiny, soft tummy.

He had forgotten that the young woman was still there. Whoops.

Jaq lifted his stumpy paws from the skateboard, snuffling at the woman's hand as she placed it out in front of his short nose, before he decided she was okay and offered her hand a lick. She wasn't mom, but she seemed friendly enough. Jaq's tiny tail wiggled in delight as he let the young woman pet him.

Edward looked down at Jaq, frowning a little, "oh he's not mine, he belongs to my daughter. She calls him Jaq jaq, which is completely silly for a dog, but whatever!" Edward exclaimed, pretending the tiny little bulldog was an airplane, making zooming noises as Eddie flew the dog around, being gentle.

Eddie could shoot someone out of cold blood for no reason and feel nothing, and yet this little doggy was warming his heart. The world sure was a funny place.

Jaq was definitely pure bred, he knew Enigma would not have it any other way.

"And just what do you call this one?" Edward asked, holding the puppy up so that they were looking into each others eyes.

He was asking Jonathan for one of these things for Christmas.

Maggie sat back on her heels, letting the bulldog--Jaq Jaq--lick her hand, and started petting him just under his ears, a spot that always proved popular with her dogs. Butch got bored of the new dog and wandered over to the man, his leash tangling around Maggie's feet. He sniffed noisily and messily around the man's shoes.

"That's Cujo," she said, looking up and frowning as the man zoomed the small dog. Cujo drooled. "You might not want to excite him too much. Teacup bulldogs are prone to epilepsy." She looked down and extracted herself from the tangle of Butch's leash, wincing at the motion and standing reluctantly up again. Squatting down was harder on her abdominal muscles than she liked to admit. "The one giving you a shoe-shine is Butch, and the one fangirling Jaq Jaq is Kitty. Believe it or not, these are momma's good kids."

Edward was currently towering over all of the animals, as well as the young woman, which prompted Eddie to kneel down, setting the dog he was holding onto its tiny feet on the ground. When his hands were free, he glanced over at the one currently licking his expensive shoes, growling at it for a moment in distaste. He couldn't find it in himself to just shove the dog away though, and instead scooped it up, holding onto it. This would make it easier, kneeling down, to make sure the tiny doggies didn't fall or anything.

To Eddie, every dog was a puppy, no matter the size it age, and it was that way with every animal. Cats were kitties, and Jonathan's horse was always going to be a horsie or a pony. He called them that mainly to irritate Jonathan, and most of the time it worked.

When the strange woman stood up, Eddie did too, throwing his shoulders back to stand at his full height, looking her over for a moment, still holding one of the dogs, Butch. "So, you said you rescue them? From what? Dragons?" Eddie had heard of people taking dogs in, he was unfamiliar with the actual term. Gotham had been more full of cats, more than anything really, and nobody rescued alley cats, unless you were Selena Kyle, and even then she was probably particular on her feline friends. He never cared much for Selena, but that was neither here nor there.

Eddie didn't believe anyone couldn't love a dog like this little one, it just wasn't possible, and then he remembered that Jonathan hated dogs, so asking him for one was going to be out of the question. Bastard.

Cujo, overwhelmed with exertion from wiggling and excitement, plopped down on his side and panted noisily. In the man's arms, Butch gave a few token wiggles but seemed content to be held.

"From well-meaning owners who wanted a cute little dog but didn't do the breed research," Maggie said, looking unhappily down at where Cujo wheezed on the sidewalk. "They couldn't or wouldn't deal with the epilepsy, the sinus issues, the skin problems, digestive problems, and the host of weird genetic issues that come with trying to breed an already problem breed down too small too quickly. Sorry, sweetie," she said, reaching down to Jaq Jaq. "It's not your fault."

She reached down and hefted Cujo up from where he marinated in his drool, worried that he'd overheat on the sidewalk. He wasn't terribly heavy--only twenty pounds--but she winced. She hoped she hadn't walked them too far. She couldn't carry them home right now. "So I take them in and make sure they're well cared for."

He heard the tiny little wheezing sound that Cujo was making, his eyes filing downwards to look at the furry little puddle of doggy that was splayed out on the sidewalk, for a moment, shivering with delight at the cuteness, watching as the still nameless woman scooped the furball off of the sidewalk, glancing back over at her.

Edward continued to cradle Butch in his arms, clearing his throat, "Quite admirable of you." He said, looking down at the dog in his arms, still fascinated by the size of it. He really wanted to see if it would fit into his pocket, and was tempted to try it, but he refrained as he figured the woman wouldn't like it too much if he was caught trying to shove a tiny dog into his slacks pocket.

"By the way, I'm Edward." He said, though he didn't offer his hand to her, merely looked over at her and offered her a sky smile, "Do people that rescue dogs have special names? You know, something clever like "Poodle Pan" or "Super Spaniel"?" He asked, just teasing her.

Jaq snorted, maw hanging ajar so that his tongue lolled from his lower jaw, before he mounted the skateboard and rode past them down the sidewalk. Eddie didn't even seem to notice.

The skateboard trick was cute, but Eddie basically hated the man that taught Jaq how to do it, and if given the chance Eddie would smear the good Doctors name all over the pavement at any moment. That was what he deserved, for being such an idiot.

"Maggie," she said, not offering her hand back. She was more than used to people not wanting to shake hands.

She couldn't help but grin at the stupid dog trick. "I've never managed to get any of mine to do anything more complicated than the usual sit, stay, whatever," she said. "No wait," she said, shaking her head and adjusting Cujo in her arms. "Ralphie used to dance on his back legs. I don't know how he did it, these guys are so top-heavy... I never got his previous owner to tell me how she got him to do it, either."

Ralphie had been a sad case. An older dog owned by an elderly couple until the husband had died and converted in his sleep. Luckily, the wife had been awake and walking Ralphie by the time she'd realized what was going on and had escaped, but had surrendered Ralphie to go to a high-security assisted living facility after.

But such was life. Ralphie hadn't outlived the old couple by more than a few months, but he'd been a clever little sweetheart in that time.

"The skateboard's a good idea, though," she said. "Gives them an assist so they don't get tired out as fast. Maybe I'll get little roller skates for my pack."

It wasn't though Eddie didn't want to shake Maggie's hand, he had just been holding a puppy and it wouldve been difficult to maneuver the tiny, wiggling ball of fluff to be able to get a hand available to offer. Besides, the puppy was much more fun at the moment, and although Maggie was definitely very easy on the eyes, Eddie was easily distracted.

Eddie glanced over at Jaq, whom had boarded back to where they were standing, managing to bump into one of Eddie's long legs, causing the man to grunt, then glare down at the dog, who just barked happily, wiggling its stubby tail.

Eddie thought the skateboard trick was cute, too, but he acted like he didn't, rolling his eyes at the large English bulldog, "Yeah, Bruce taught him that. Stupid, really. I think Bruce just likes to watch the poor thing crash into the walls." Eddie explained, shaking his head. "You'd think that being a smartie pants scientist he would have more common sense, but you just can't get that lucky can you?" He grumbled, trying to make Bruce seem stupid and useless to this woman, though her opinion wouldn't really matter either way since she didn't know Bruce.

"I guess we just have to make sure all of the doors to the stairwells and elevators are closed. Wouldn't want the poor thing to take a fall on his skateboard."

He shifted the puppy in his arms, once again, trying not to let it wriggle away as the fall would be a long one, and the pavement didn't seem to be very forgiving.

((Sorry so late!))

"Most of the scientists I've met are... quirky, at best," Maggie said, rubbing Cujo behind the ears with one hand. He drooled over her t-shirt. "Either they've got a subscription to the weirdest porn you can imagine or they like to spend time throwing mutant octupi at your friends. Sense enters into it less than you'd think. Everyone needs a hobby." She shrugged. "Teaching a bulldog to skateboard seems pretty harmless, as far as it goes."

There were also the completely homicidal power-hungry ones, and the ones who played shell games with their own clones in order to cheat death, and the ones who tried to overthrow governments, but somehow that seemed just a little too heavy for polite everyday conversation, Maggie decided. Still. Her recent experience with scientists had been decidedly less than pleasant. At least the ones in the employ of her parents seemed to have been screened under better vetting processes.

"Yeah," she said, sighing and sitting down on the sidewalk, since dignity was for people who didn't regularly wear dog drool as an accessory. Kitty trotted over, jumping into her lap. Maggie set Cujo down and let the two teacup bulldogs figure out how best to share lap space between themselves. "They don't have the best eyesight, do they? Poor babies need all the help they can get."

(Oh that's quite alright :))

He listened to what Maggie was saying about scientists, snickering a little at the idea of anyone throwing octopi at anyone else, finding the image to be quite amusing. She was right, however about scientist, he was one of sorts too. However, Bruce wasn't too out of the ordinary when it came to odd behavior, or at least Edward wasn't aware of any, but that didn't mean he wouldn't make stuff up. "Well, this scientist in particular is terrible. He takes blood samples from people for his own personal gain, without their permission. I'm pretty sure he's worked out all of Arkhams poor patients. None of them are right in the head so I think he just feels like their permission doesn't matter to run his experiments or take their blood."

Eddie was definitely stretching the lies about Bruce, but he didn't care. He hated that man.

"If you ever run into Bruce, be careful. He might try to make you into an experiment. Then who would watch over all of these cute doggies?"

He moved to sit down on he ground too, setting down the dog he was holding, before having Jaq crawl into his lap. Eddie made a face, shoving the dog off of him, gently, as the dog was pretty much crushing his lap. "Good boy, Jaq." Eddie said, patting the dog in the head. Eddie laughed as the smaller versions of his dog scrambled for a spot in Maggie's lap. "Oh that's just too precious."

((RAGE I just spent like ten minutes writing a response and IJ ATE IT.))

"Hey, don't laugh. Shaun was pissed." She smiled wistfully, remembering her former boss' what the fuck?!-filled reaction to having an infected Pacific giant octopus thrown at his face to see what would happen. She missed him. She missed all her friends--some maybe a little more deeply than others, she had to admit.

Maggie's nose wrinkled in distaste. "It always comes down to experimenting on the vulnerable, doesn't it? Hell, the CDC does it; why shouldn't everyone else?" She sighed, giving Kitty her turn at ear rubs. "Consider your warning duly taken."

It wasn't even a matter of mere distaste for her now. She wouldn't be responsible for a second--no, third Rising. Her stomach clenched in memory of the horrific images from the aftermath of Tropical Storm Fiona, the media-dubbed Second Rising. She wouldn't bring that here if it was in her power. This was a nice place. The people seemed so unsuspecting, despite what Dr. Lecter had told her about the previous zombie outbreak. And then there were the animals.

She reached out from petting Kitty to reach out and let Jaq Jaq sniff her hand again and see if he wanted ear rubs, too. He'd be doomed with all of the people here by virtue of his size if anything went wrong. "I think I'll be doing my best to avoid any mad scientists from here on out."

(I hate when that happens)

The idea of an octopus being hurled at someone's head was still amusing, even if it didn't happen to him personally, he still found the image amusing.

Upon hearing that she believed him, Eddie smiled wide and nodded, "Yes, it's tragic isn't it? I'm afraid for the dog, especially. He's Bruce's favorite. God knows what will happen to poor Jaq if Bruce finds another dog." Eddie said, looking sad, though all if this was a huge production. He was definitely on the way to making this pretty young woman hate Bruce for no real reason and he loved it.

"That's probably for the best. He can be quite brutal. He was dating my daughter for a while and I can't even tell you about the stuff he put her through. She's better now that they're apart." Edward said, nodding, picking up another puppy. He loved puppies.

"If I were you, I would steer clear of Stark Tower." Eddie said, nodding at the massive building that was visible on the skyline, "Thats where Bruce and his other scientist friend do all of their testing and their dirty work. It's not a safe place to be."

"If anyone tries anything on my dogs, they'll regret it," Maggie said matter-of-factly. Though more out of habit than with any real backing at the moment; she didn't have her lawyers, or her shady network of friends, or--more importantly--her parents' shady network of friends while she was here. This was going to be difficult.

If, as Dr. Lecter had said, money was no obstacle to people here, what advantage did that leave her? She'd have to bluff her way forward while she figured that out. Thankfully she hadn't ended up like so many of her childhood friends, who had assumed "rich" as their only identities. Her parents had taught her well. She'd figure something out.

She glanced over at Stark Tower and narrowed her eyes. "Avoiding the giant tower that advertises the presence of mad scientists to all and sundry. Got it." With a huff, she stood, dusted her long patchwork skirt off, and rounded up her dogs. "I'm gonna need Butch back. It's about time for these guys to head home." She flashed Edward a pleasant smile and favored Jaq Jaq with a truly fond one. "Nice running into you, though."

People around here were important to have as allies, and Maggie needed to be careful choosing who she associated with, considering she was such a good person and though Eddie wasn't aware of exactly how special she was, he had a feeling she could be useful later on for God knew what. Networking meant everything.

Money was also not an obstacle, especially for the billionairs and the independantly wealthy folks like Edward himself, though the City was willing to give to those that needed and Maggie would learn this soon if she hadn't already. This was something that took a while to grasp, even for smart people like Bruce, it took seasoned residents of the City to know this fact, wether from experience or simply being shown, but the City was special, and it had a way of knowing things....special things, and it was generous.

Eddie handed over her dog, waving goodbye to the furry little ball of doggie that she was going to take with her. "You'd be best to figure out early who your friends are, the people that will look out for your well-being, Maggie. It'll do you good when the time comes to fend off the scientists. This city is full of them." He explained, looking down at Jaq, whom had already began skating away. "It was a pleasure meeting you. If you ever need....help, you can find me at Arkham Asylum, helping Dr. Crane with his patients. A good man, Dr. Crane." He said, radiently. "Alright, Jaq, I'm coming." He said, rolling his eyes at the dog, offering Maggie a nod as he slipped past her, following his dog out of the park, ushering Jaq Jaq back in the direction of home.
