"City's like a kid given five bucks and sent into a penny candy store." Jesse shook his head. "It wants everything and thinks it can get everything."
He'd given a lot of thought to balance over his time here. As much as he hated to admit it, he thought that the City knew how to keep balance within its walls. It was a tenuous grip, and it meant that there needed to be faces like The Joker around, but if he looked at himself and Red, well, there was balance right there.
"It ain't easy to see people you think're dead bein alive here. It really ain't. My gal goes through it from time to time. Her ex shows his face, stays a while, then is gone again. The moment in time she's from, he's dead. All the times he's come though, he's been alive. Long before it ever happened. Thinks that he and his woman should have the same relationship. Up until recently, she's tried."
He shook his head again. "Got another friend who adopted a boy here, then he vanished, and she has to live knowin that the point where he returned to is his death. So it hurts on both sides. As far as I know, the people back in yer world, they don't even know yer gone. If ya ever go back to it, you go back to right where you were taken from."
