Soundlessly setting her teacup on its saucer, Beauty gave the mayor a soft look. It must have been difficult to be the son of the Queen of Hearts - and if he had any passion at all for his people, that must have hurt more. This man seemed to have very bad luck, for very different reasons.
"I imagine you would have made a fine ruler," she said, trying to pull his mind off darker matters. He had enough already. "I'm glad you have the chance to be the mayor here. What's it like? I imagine you get invited to all the nice parties!"
Beauty didn't care much for parties. Truth be told, she rather preferred staying in her library and reading. She could stay there for weeks, if only she didn't have to eat! But she knew that most people enjoyed a good soiree -- and surely Jack Heart was no exception. She hoped, at least.
