Christine had spent as much of the night as possible speaking with every person in this room. She spent as close to equal time with each group or individual before moving on and always made sure she was presenting herself well and that her smile was fully in place. The smile was not faked of course. She genuinely was incredibly happy and on occasion accepted a dance from the gentlemen who asked. But always politely, never in a way that could give a man false hope. That was the last thing she wanted.
But soon she grew tired. Not so much that she wished to sleep immediately but in a way that made her realise she would quite like some peace. As if sensing her thoughts, her angel began moving to her. She wished they had not had to spend so much time apart but she understood why. They both had their part to play in this performance. They both had to speak with the guests and could not seem inappropriate. Rumours would not help his reputation and she would not tarnish it.
As much as she wished those things people could talk about were true.
Her hand was in his with east once more and she felt his presence all around and within her. She felt whole once more. It was cool outside especially given she had not thought to bring something to cover her bare shoulders but the walk to the car would be quick and soon she was within the warmth of it. She fixed her dress a she settled in the vehicle and waited for Erik to sit with her.
His movements were mesmerising. Christine would not claim she was not staring as she done so without worry. Without fear. He was so enchanting to watch that she would gladly do it for as much time as she had. Finally, his eyes were on hers and although her wide grin from earlier was gone there was still a fond, pleased smile. Just for him.
"I did. A most wonderful evening. Though I must confess I am happy to have left now. To finally be able to relax a little." Her hand reached out, settling gently on his own gloved hand. "Everyone praised you and rightly so. Did you enjoy your night?"
It was curious how natural it felt. Very natural in an odd way.
