"If this ain't the strangest thing I ever done, I don't know what is." Jesse said the words low, though he didn't doubt it would get to the ears of most of the congregation. And he was smiling when he said it.
He didn't have any idea what the knife thing was about, but he guessed it wasn't really his business. Anything these two had wanted from him had been explained before hand.
"So." He said, looking up. "We're all gathered here today to witness the union of these two beings. Our numbers are small, but that makes the folk present and this ceremony no less important. Each here was hand picked by this woman and this man to see them into their new life together, joined as one.
"People like these two don't take marriage and vows lightly. This union is a sacred trust between them, a decision not come by lightly and a bond I dare say could be nigh unbreakable. I'd sure as like to see some dumbshit try. Given the number of years each has spent upon the earth, findin somebody that they quite literally want to spend the rest of their lives with is a special thing. When you've got all of eternity to look forward to and it ain't some figure of speech, you gotta choose your companions carefully.
"Seein these two standin here gives me a bit of hope that it'll all work out for the rest of us."
Jesse glanced at the couple. "Either of ya got anything to say to the other?"
