The City often threw people into an anachronistic mix, but this was the first time Arthur had intimate experience with the actuality of it. He could tell from the ruffles and the white that she wasn't used to slinky evening gowns that clung with silk and sequins, and from her manner of speaking he didn't think she wanted a Chanel pantsuit either. Arthur picked up on the French quickly and switched languages. He had an apartment in Paris, one of his bases of operation, but he was still far from fluent. He mixed tenses here and there and he had a rather thick American accent, but still understandable.
"So a little bit of everything," Arthur said, friendly, following her gaze to the other guy and deducing that he wasn't the teacher she was talking about. "Does your teacher have a very strict budget?"
