Veronica followed his gaze, eyebrows furrowing. Something was wrong with her new friend, here, even if he was scruffy eye candy.
"You... you don't know what a phone is?"
Okay. She had to be careful, here. This was NOT Ewan, she reasoned, but one of the many characters he'd played. She had to think. Who was this guy? He looked really, really familiar. And Veronica did not want to be the one to point out to him that he was fiction--at least not on first meeting, and certainly not while it looked like someone'd just run over his pup--
"Oh."
She'd watched 'Moulin Rouge' a million times with Lilly. It had been a favorite. How could it not be? There was a Halloween where the girls had considered being can-can dancers because of it. And she'd always liked Christian, simply because he was so soulful and romantic. And also because... Ewan McGregor. But Veronica maintained that you couldn't blame her for that. And every time the movie started, Lilly would tear up because Satine was dead, and it was all just such a mess, and you knew it if you'd seen the movie before.
She swallowed. This was her first encounter, that she was aware of, with a movie character. It was even weirder than meeting Lois Lane.
"It's a telephone," Veronica said. She held hers up and wiggled her wrist, to show him she had one, too. "A pocket-sized one. If you push..." She went up on her tip toes and took a look toward his to see what model he'd ended up with. "... that button? It'll show you a keypad, and you can push the buttons for a phone number."
With that out of the way, she had to do the obvious.
"My name is Veronica," she said. "Are you alright?"
