Charlie recognized the voice and turned to look. He almost did a double take, but his attention never fully left his partner in that dress. He didn't bother hiding that he was looking; he nodded to the woman behind the counter who set his order near the cash register.
The detective was curious, which could be a very dangerous thing. He walked over to his partner to get a better look; she'd always been attractive, but this dress was more than everyday attractive. She'd been trying with this dress, and as far as he was concerned, she was succeeding. Only, she was here, ordering a box of chocolate pastry without any prejudice to what sort of chocolate pastry, and that was not what a successful woman did. He was pretty certain it wasn't, anyway.
"Two eclairs, three strawberry chocolate tarts, the small ones. Mm, half a dozen chocolate meringues, three slices of the chocolate torte there. No, the triple cho..yes. And two German chocolate cupcakes." She may not have been specific, but Charlie would be. It made things easier sometimes.
"Very nice dress." Charlie smiled as if he hadn't just taken over ordering for her and hadn't started deducing what he was seeing implied.
