Having the City as one's friend made one very unafraid. Before, Beauty hadn't trusted darkened streets or unfriendly faces. Before, Beauty had shied away from those things that seemed to be threatening. But since she met Thomas, since she knew that the City wasn't just a City, since she knew that her friend would always be there with her, things had been different. She possessed a confidence that hadn't been there before. And although she still preferred not to linger in dark alleys or try to make friends with those who seemed like they might harm her, she wasn't nearly so terrified of everything anymore.
And that's why, when she heard raised voices and shattering glass coming through the doorway of one particular establishment this night, she let her concern for humanity overcome her concern for her safety. Tightening her grip on the small paper bag containing those delightful bits of jewelry Ted had told her about, she detoured into the doorway, then opened the door.
The noise had been loud on the street, but now it was deafening. Everyone looked to be shouting or in a fist fight, and it was a terrible thing to see! After everything the residents of the City had been through, this is what they decided to do to each other? It made her angry. It disappointed her. It made her sad. And it made her want to do something.
She wasn't a violent person. She rarely ever raised her voice. But this time, it seemed like shouting was the right thing to do.
So, Beauty edged around the perimeter of the room, found an empty table in front of a window, and climbed onto it so that her voice would carry better.
"HEY!" she shouted, hands on her hips. "HEY, HELLO! STOP IT, STOP! YOU'RE GROWN MEN! ACT L--"
One of the grown men she was chiding decided he needed to knock her right off the table. She caught his intentions -- it was rather obvious, what with the barreling straight toward her -- and stepped backwards twice, trying to get out of his way. The table toppled, and she was very suddenly, very desperately trying not to fall with it.
