Let's Walk (Dean/Dinah, continued in comments)
The dinner had been strange, but a little bit fun too. The more Dinah got to know Zoe, the more she liked the woman. And the more curious she was about her as well. There was more to her, Dinah was sure. Though that was a mystery to be solved another time.
Things were still a shade on the awkward side with Dean, but she supposed that was to be expected. She was ready to work on getting back to normal, which meant that she tried to keep up a steady stream of chitchat on the way out. It wasn’t perfect, but she was trying. She stopped once they got out to their vehicles.
“Thank you for coming along tonight,” she said, putting a hand on his arm.
She hadn’t really gone out of her way to touch him over the past few days. It wasn’t that she was angry, but she just didn’t want to seem like she was trying to push things. Of course, they usually did hug and touch, so her lack of touching might have seemed strange. Or he might have been oblivious or relieved. She had no idea, really.
“It would have been a lot more awkward to be the third wheel,” she said with a small smile.
----
“I don’t know. Think the old guy wouldn’t have minded being alone with two hot women.” Dean shrugged. “If she didn’t scare the shit..hell, even if she does scare the shit out of me, I wouldn’t mind being alone with you two.” He waggled his brows then laughed. He was joking only a little bit. Probably.
“Seriously though, it could have gone worse. And, what was with Zoe? You get that ‘she knows more than she should’ vibe? Or was it more ‘what the hell’s she doing with this mook’ vibe? I can see how both would work.” He smiled at her. He looked around at the dark street then as if the City knew what he was looking for, there was the Park.
“I’m not ready to head back. I hear they’ve got ice cream and churros somewhere in there.” His head tilted to the invitingly dark green grass and the cute lamp lit paths. “Walk with me?” He offered his hand and a smile.
----
“I think she knows more than she’s letting on,” Dinah agreed. “Then again, the woman is dating a god-or God, capital G,” Dinah said with a frown. “I’m pretty sure it’s safe to assume that there’s more to her than we know about. As for us two alone, don’t forget that I could kick your ass too,” she said with a little laugh.
She took a moment to consider the hand and the offer of a walk in the park and dessert. Holding hands might be a simple thing, but generally friends didn’t walk around holding hands. She really didn’t know what to make of things with the two of them. She’d assumed that the other night would be the end of it. They’d kissed and he’d stopped things and that was that. But the way he’d been acting tonight... Tonight had felt more like a double date than like simply being accompanied to dinner with a platonic friend.
Though maybe a walk would give them the chance to talk, which was something that they would have to do eventually. Or maybe she would simply enjoy his company and try not to overthink things.
She took his hand and gave him a small smile.
“I could always go for dessert.”
If there was a double entendre to be had there, she hadn’t meant it that way. She walked with him toward the park. While she had had over a year to get used to the City’s moving streets, she felt like she was getting used to it all over again after the brief break when the streets had remained still. Not to mention that she would ever quite get used to the City’s uncanny knack of putting certainly places in a person’s path sometimes.
----
“This has to be less weird than that dinner, right?” Dean smiled, his fingers squeezing hers softly. “And, yeah, she’s more than she seems. The woman probably knows Bruce Wayne, too. He gets all the hot chicks.” The hunter sighed then laughed, squeezing her fingers again.
“I know you can kick my ass, but I’d taze you or something first. The key is to not get in a fist fight with you.” He laughed. “Plus, if this is the fantasy world of me and just the two of you, do you really think fighting without pudding would be happening?” He knew he was digging himself a hole, but he didn’t seem to mind it.
“Seriously, it wasn’t a bad night. It was nice being in the same room with you and not feeling like you were in a completely different zip code. You’ve been distant.” He wasn’t accusing her, so much as stating something he’d noticed. He had missed her.
----
Dinah shook her head.
“I think I just won’t ask next time you want to elaborate on a fantasy,” she said with a laugh. “As long as you realize that I don’t share in real life.”
Her expression grew a bit more serious as she thought over the comment about being distant. She had been a little distant, as much because she was adjusting to the new living situation as she was simply trying to shove aside the feelings that had been brought to the surface on the night that the City had moved her in.
“Sorry I’ve been distant,” she said. She assumed he didn’t need an explanation as to the reasons why.
She did glance down at their joined hands, still trying to figure out what was going on just now.
