"I was joking," Megan said, but she still looked pleased.
She looked at him, black eyes wide and steady. "Thank you," she said. "But I don't want people getting hurt for me. I'm getting good at taking care of myself. And if anything happened to people I care about--to you--I'd never forgive myself. I mean that." She tried to break the mood, blowing hard at some lower-hanging glass and setting it swaying gently. Not much, but a little. "Besides," she said, "I don't think that'll be much of a problem. I haven't seen any big nasty soul-stealing demons here. They're kind of hard to miss."
She hmphed, watching the light play across the walls and ceiling. "Good, because suddenly I have an awful lot of free time."
