Laundry day is a very interesting day. (Alice)
Megan's cozy third-floor flat was clean.

Of course, this resulted in two bags full of dirty laundry that had previously been tossed everywhere. She frowned down at the bags, hefted one, grunted, and put it down, staring doubtfully out the window. The nearest laundromat wasn't that far away, but...

A little cheating was useful sometimes. And with the streets staying put, she didn't even have to worry about ending up somewhere completely weird. One Sihal Novarum Chinoth later, and she and one of the laundry bags appeared inside the laundromat in a halo of pink light. She dusted off her hands, satisfied, and dragged the bag over to the nearest empty machine.

Alice was pretty accustomed to strange things. She'd gone through an enchanted mirror to an entirely different place, much like the City. And Wonderland had been full enough of strange things. But she couldn't recall a pink light ever just... appearing. Especially not bringing along with it a bright pink haired girl dusting her hands off with a couple of bags of laundry.

She really couldn't help but stare. Honest. She couldn't have controlled it if she'd wanted to. And her mouth? It might have been slightly agape. Other than the pink light, the girl seemed ordinary enough. Save for the pointed ears and pink hair.

Wonderland was looking so normal right about now.

Megan opened the washer and started shoving things in, shaking out a shirt. A sock was stuck through the neck and the hole cut in the back for her wings, and she pulled it out with a sigh before tossing both in.

She caught the staring woman's eye and waved. "Hi?"

Alice realized she'd been caught when Megan looked at her and waved. She flushed slightly and gave her a small smile and her own wave in return.

"Hi." She shook her head, trying to clear it and make sense of what she was seeing at the same time. "Sorry to stare..." She paused a moment and then glanced back at Megan. "I guess I'm just not used to people appearing out of thin air."

She was folding some towels on the top of one of the top loading washers, although they were a bit sloppy now because she wasn't paying as much attention as she should to them.

"Oh, it's no problem," Megan said cheerily. "I don't do that much, but I didn't really feel like flying all the way over here. It's a nice day out, but I've been letting my laundry sit for way too long, and sometimes you just don't feel like hauling it all the way when you can just, you know--" She wiggled her fingers, apparently Megan-sign-language for teleporting. "I've got so lazy since I learned it, but it's got to be good for something, right?"

"Flying. Yeah, totally understandable. I get tired of flying everywhere, too." She was being sarcastic, mostly because she was still trying to come to grips with the fact that Megan had just appeared like it was normal.

So teleporting could be taught? Really. Well, now that could come in handy. And wouldn't she scare the hell out of Hatter if she teleported right into his shower.

"How does one go about learning to teleport?"

Megan paused, looking over. She furrowed her eyebrows. "Were you making fun of me, or can you actually fly? I know people who can fly without wings, so I need to ask."

She looked down again at her laundry and twisted her hands into another shirt. "It wasn't exactly easy. Or pleasant." She laughed, once. "Or voluntary, really. I don't think I'd be a good teacher, if that's what you're asking."

Alice shook her head apologetically. "Sorry, I wasn't making fun. It's just that this place, these people... it's been an adjustment. I'm not used to people who can fly or streets that move." Not that they'd been moving lately. But that was beside the point.

"I was mostly just wondering if anyone could learn it. Or do you have to be... magic or something?"

"Oh, I totally get that," Megan said. "Not about the not being used to flying people thing, though. I'm used to that. But the part about this place. If you're not used to it, it's weird. Which... is kind of self-explanatory, I guess."

She grimaced and looked back at the washing machine. "I wouldn't say anyone, really. I think there's got to be potential there, natural or otherwise." She shrugged. "I was an otherwise. I don't recommend it."

Alice shook her head. This was just beyond bizarre. How was she going to explain to her mother when she got home what she was seeing in this place? She wondered if she would ever get home, but she hoped so. Her mother was important to her and she hoped she was alright.

Alice nodded. "Well, alright. But I think I probably don't have any potential. All I have the potential for is walking through mirrors into strange lands." She gave a huffy laugh. She never talked about going to Wonderland with anyone other than those that had been there. But Megan had just teleported, she figured it wouldn't sound all that strange in comparison.

"See? Now that sounds awesome!" Megan abandoned throwing her laundry into the machine in favour of paying attention to the other girl. Woman. Whatever. "Did you get here through a mirror? That'd be interesting. I think I got lost teleporting or something. I was supposed to be going back to my grandparents in Wales. This place isn't half bad, though, even if it is a little odd. There's a distinct lack of people trying to kill me so far, so that's only a good thing, right?" She smiled cheerfully, completely oblivious to how weird that sounded. "So, a mirror? Really? And you didn't bump into the glass part?"

Alice shrugged, "Not that awesome. Kind of a pain in the ass, really." To be yanked from one world into the next was jarring, not to mention the fact that an evil queen wanted your head and your boyfriend was her son. Yeah, it pretty much sucked.

"No, I... well, I don't really know. I remember waking up in the hospital after I went back through the mirror, but then I was here." She shrugged again, then looked back at Megan. The girl had pink hair and pointed pixie ears. This place was all kinds of crazy, but if that bitch of a queen wasn't around, she could probably handle it.

"No, it sort of wibbled and then I was falling. And falling. And falling. It would have been nice if I could fly."

"Oh." Megan wilted a little. "That sounds considerably less awesome. If it makes you feel any better, I got yanked through a portal into hell once." She frowned, revised her count on her fingers, and shrugged. "Four times. It pretty much sucks. No mirrors involved, though. Think we could start a 'travelled to different worlds and/or dimensions, got the t-shirt' club?" She looked back at her laundry and sighed. "Not that I got a T-shirt from Limbo. I don't think I would have wanted one from there. It would have probably been all leather and chains and really, really skanky and uncomfortable."

Alice raised a brow and looked properly horrified for Megan's experiences. "Four times? Geez, what did you do?" She had to have pissed someone off pretty badly to get yanked into hell more than once.

She laughed, "Oh yeah, I would rock that shirt."

"I didn't get a t-shirt, either. I did get this, though." She turned her arm over to show the green vine-like mark on her arm that looked a bit like a tattoo. Only she hadn't voluntarily been branded with the thing. It was her souvenir for being an Oyster in Wonderland.

"It's a long, weird story." Megan chuckled humorlessly. "But I guess the moral of the story is, don't make deals when you don't know the cost." She looked at her shoes. "It was a good idea at the time."

She blew out her breath and looked up again. "Anyway. Ooh, interesting. Did it hurt? What is it?"

Alice nodded sagely. She knew that well enough. Sometimes you didn't have a choice in the matter, though. "Well, you're alive. That's what counts, right?"

Alice shook her head, "No, it didn't really hurt. It was sort of uncomfortable, but it just kind of appeared when the sunlight hit me." She shrugged. "It's um, a mark that the Oysters get in Wonderland. Oysters are what they call humans."

She shrugged. Alive was good. Alive and knowing that part of you was twisted and gone forever... sometimes, she had to wonder.

"Oysters?" Megan said, making a face. "That's not even..." She stopped and thought. Some mutants called regular humans "flatscans." It was probably just some weird slang with some other weird explanation that made sense in whatever dimension the girl had found herself in. "Okay. Oysters. Are they always like that, or do some people get different ones? Because sometimes I thought it would be cool to have a tattoo of like, a flower or something cute, but I'd hate to have it just show up. What if you got something like an anchor that said Mom on it?" She shuddered. "Tacky."

Alice sighed. It was a very long, very twisted and strange tale. She hopped up on an empty washer and kicked her feet back and forth, careful not to strike the washer and make it clang all over the room.

"That's what they call humans in Wonderland. It has something to do with the "pearls"," and she raised her hands and did the quotes in the air with her fingers, "They extract. See, they hook people up to games and other sensory experiences that draw emotions out of them. Lust, greed, joy, excitement..." She shrugged, not really understanding why they couldn't experience those things for themselves.

"They call them teas, and they drink them so they can experience the human emotions they can't get there. I don't really know all the details, but yeah, it's weird." She lifted her arm and rested it in her lap, running her finger over the green vine-like mark.

"They're all like this, but they vary in shape and where they show up on the body. I saw some people with them on their faces. I'm just glad mine is somewhere I can hide it if I want to."

Megan blanched. "They didn't get you, did they?" she asked, flying up and settling herself on one of the machines facing the other girl. "Not that there's anything wrong with you if they did. Unless that does something really, really bad to you and makes you evil or something, in which case that is technically something wrong but not really your fault." One hand started twisting nervously at her hair. "Maybe yours will fade away at some point, now that you're not there any more?" She sounded hopeful.

"No, I picked the clasp on the container and fell into the water, but that in itself was pretty freaky. Then I met Hatter and," she shrugged, it all spiraled from there. It would take a day to tell the whole story.

"It just makes people forget who they are. They," She glanced down at her arm again. "They had my dad. He disappeared when I was a kid and he didn't remember who he was enough to come back home."

"Oh. I'm sorry." Megan was uncharacteristically quiet for a while before the inevitable urge to talk beat out sympathy. "My da died when I was little. It's tough. But... you know, you get through it, right?" She wanted to ask if the girl had found a way to get him back and reverse it, but she had a feeling she wasn't going to like the answer. There weren't many happy endings to that sort of thing.

Alice looked over at her, "I'm sorry to hear that." She sighed and frowned slightly. "My dad was shot before we could leave. He died." It was still fresh for her, considering it had technically only been a few months, but she had come to terms with it. He'd been absent for so much of her life that she was used to being without him. It was just permanent now. "But yeah, we get through it."

Ouch. Yeah, not many happy endings after all. Megan kicked her feet and looked at the floor. "Sorry," she said again.

She cleared her throat. "So now that we've brought the entire laundromat down... Hi, I'm Megan." She grinned. "Probably should have started with that, right?"

Alice shrugged. They really had sort of brought the whole place down. She wasn't usually such a Debbie Downer, but she hadn't really had anyone to talk to about it. Not anyone who would really listen and understand, anyway.

She laughed and shook her head, "Yeah, it would have been the polite thing to do. Instead I stared at you and then told you my sob stories." She held out her hand to shake. "I'm Alice. It's nice to meet you, Megan."

"I'm used to the staring, really. As long as you're not throwing rocks or something, it's easy enough to deal with," she said with a laugh, and leaned out to shake Alice's hand. "Nice to meet you too, Alice."

"I'm not typically a rock thrower, so no worries." She grinned and heard her dryer ding. She pulled her clothes out of the dryer and put them into her, or Jack's, laundry basket.

"Hey, if you ever want to hang out... I'm living with Jack Heart for the time being. At least until I can find another place. But I should get back."

"Wait, as in the mayor?" Megan flew up in the air--literally--with that revelation. She hoped it wasn't the mayor. Maybe Heart was a really common last name here.

"Right. Well, um. Nice meeting you, see you around! Gotta get back to laundry. It's not going to wash itself. Except that the machine washes it, so it's kind of like washing itself, and that's completely beside the point, so good luck finding a new place and..." She offered a little wave.

Alice paused in hefting her laundry basket onto her hip. "Yeah, Jack's the mayor. At least, that's what he says, anyway." She shrugged.

"It was nice to meet you, too, Megan." She gave a low chuckle at the obvious ramble the girl had gone off on and gave her a return wave.
