Charlie stayed where he was for a little longer before standing and settling back in his own chair. The subject had changed, and it was time to move on perhaps. They would possibly come back to the subject, especially if she really did talk to Dean. Charlie wasn't going to push her either way. She'd tell him eventually, just as she had told him this.
"No. I was thinking something long and painful, but then I thought why should I do that. I think they should name themselves, but I don't speak fish. I should find someone who does speak fish. Maybe we have a fish translator somewhere." If this were back in LA, Charlie might have been joking, but here, he knew it was possible that such a thing or person existed. Here, Charlie Crews could probably find someone who could understand enough of what the fish were saying/doing to get a name.
"For now I call them 'Fish' or 'the Fish' - they don't come when you call. You know who comes when you call? Not cats. Horses do sometimes, but not cats. They like to make people wait." Of course, Charlie was talking about Earth cats. Jake wasn't exactly a normal cat, so it was possible that he'd come when called. Or Charlie might have gotten a very obstinate cat.
"People come, but they don't exactly make good pets." The detective shook his head. "Dogs come when called. Maybe I should get a dog. You could get a dog. Jake wouldn't like a dog, would he? I was a dog. I would have come if you called." Charlie would come without being a dog, but he didn't know if he had told Jennifer about that one. Probably, but it didn't hurt to mention it again.
