Jo heard the voice, though it wasn't the first thing she'd expect to hear after death. Then again, who could really tell what the afterlife was like?
He could hear her breathing though. She realized with a start that she was breathing. Maybe it was just an illusion. Which meant that maybe the guy who was talking to her didn't realize he was dead either.
Jo stood up slowly, and then looked over at the boy-who couldn't have been older than 17 or 18 at the very most.
"No pirates here. Though if this was a hunting game, I'd kick your ass."
She smiled sweetly. It was true, after all. She'd been able to hustle a lot of hunters out of their money by playing actual hunting games with them and being underestimated.
Her expression grew more serious. She didn't exactly want to be the one to break the news to the kid, but somebody had to... right? He was so young. Too young to be dead already.
She wasn't going to think about the fact that most people might say the same thing about her. She'd made her choice and she'd died doing what she believed was right. That was enough to give her peace about her life being cut short.
